SubCulture Goodness!

Kevin Freeman and Stan Yan's series returns

SubcultureFebruary 27th - Yesterday, Ape Entertainment's series SubCulture returned and, I'll admit, that fact has me quite excited. I really enjoyed the initial Ape Entertainment mini-series by Kevin Freeman and Stan Yan and I was equally pleased to learn that SubCulture will now be something I get to enjoy twice weekly!

What are we talking about? The series has made the move from print to the web shifting to a a web comic format. The new strip will feature the known cast of characters twice weekly with the possibility of future expansion.

Explaining the move yesterday, Kevin Freeman shared...

"Stan and I have been talking about this for a while--turning SubCulture from a traditional comic to a full-time webstrip.  We both believed that the subject material would translate well into this format, and there certainly are tons of untold stories that are begging to see the light of day.  So, with the blessing of our friends at Ape Entertainment, today marks the official launch of the SubCulture webstrip.

We've decided to start the strip out at twice a week.  This is enough for us to have regular updates, but not too much so we can have time to do other things as well.  Should demand warrant more, and, should the strip start to generate a little revenue, we'll discuss increasing the frequency with which we create this.  Twice a week is enough for us also to gauge whether or not it will be popular enough for us to keep things going for a while.  So much of this depends on you, our current and future fans.

We do have plans to print these strips on paper, whether it be through a regular floppy or a more infrequent book format.  We love working on SubCulture, and hope you all will enjoy the ride with us."

Did you miss the original mini-series? I reviewed the first two issues for the site [full review] and honestly enjoyed the characters, their series and the humor. Quoting my own words from that previous review...

SubCulture #1"SubCulture proves itself to be honestly enjoyable. It's dead on in terms of the sarcastic humor often present in comic culture. It made me homesick for those bygone days before I had a career and responsibilities. I'm talking about those days when life was more about passing the hours than paying the bills. This comic is about those long days when you had time to have a five hour argument over whether or not a barbarian could deflect a broadsword strike with his bare hands (happened to me in a comic shop... what can I say). This is about those times when you couldn't wait for that holy grail of all weekdays, that Wednesday mother load of new comics. It's also about the joy of the friday "all-nighter" of video games, pizza, chips, Mountain Dew, AD&D (2nd Edition of course), Call of C'thulu and Champions and, most of all, friendship. Good times and SubCulture effortlessly brings it all right back to you. The comic itself may be black and white, but the memories it calls upon are pure technicolor."

I'm pleased to see Jason, Noel, Arthur, Skip, Travis, Babs and the entire cast of SubCulture back and I congratulate Kevin and Stan on their new project. To wet your appetite for more, here's the kickoff comic in their new on-line series...
