Ten Question About Liberty Comics With Scott Dunbier Russell Burlingame reporting for Comic Related
ComicRelated: How many of these creators did you approach, as opposed to who approached the CBLDF?
Scott Dunbier: I approached everyone in the book--that was the easiest part.
SD: Both Garth Ennis and Ed Brubaker were very above board with their publishers, they wouldn't take on a commitment like this without consulting them first. With The Boys I was involved in those conversations, the people at Dynamite were extremely helpful logistically in making the schedule work. Dan Buckley at Marvel was also very gracious and had no problem with Ed & Sean doing their story.
CR: About how long does it take you, start-to-finish, to put together a project like this one? There are obviously more moving parts than your average monthly comic.
SD: A book like this, with so many different writers, artists, colorists, letterers, and the added pages, is a very different animal from a regular comic. The sheer numbers of people you're dealing with make it a challenge to corral. From first call to last proof checked, it took about seven months. But all the contributors were very easy to work with and made it a fun project to do.
CR: Is Liberty Comics a property you guys are looking at as fairly ongoing? As in, will you do this again every year around San Diego?
SD: I'm not sure about every year, but you'll be seeing more books like this in the future.
