Ten Question About Liberty Comics With Scott Dunbier

Russell Burlingame reporting for Comic Related

This week's Ten Questions With… feature is going to be split up into a few parts to allow more of the contributors a chance to have a say, and to cut down on the load expected of people who are, by and large, on their way back from San Diego.  The first bit features Liberty Comics editor Scott Dunbier.

ComicRelated: How many of these creators did you approach, as opposed to who approached the CBLDF?

Scott Dunbier: I approached everyone in the book--that was the easiest part.

CR: With things like The Boys and Criminal being in the book, did you have to work at all in concert with people's publishers?  Or because they're creator-owned properties did you dodge that bullet?

SD: Both Garth Ennis and Ed Brubaker were very above board with their publishers, they wouldn't take on a commitment like this without consulting them first. With The Boys I was involved in those conversations, the people at Dynamite were extremely helpful logistically in making the schedule work. Dan Buckley at Marvel was also very gracious and had no problem with Ed & Sean doing their story.

CR: About how long does it take you, start-to-finish, to put together a project like this one?  There are obviously more moving parts than your average monthly comic.

SD: A book like this, with so many different writers, artists, colorists, letterers, and the added pages, is a very different animal from a regular comic. The sheer numbers of people you're dealing with make it a challenge to corral. From first call to last proof checked, it took about seven months. But all the contributors were very easy to work with and made it a fun project to do.

CR: Is Liberty Comics a property you guys are looking at as fairly ongoing?  As in, will you do this again every year around San Diego?

SD: I'm not sure about every year, but you'll be seeing more books like this in the future.

Side Note...

The drawing of Scott Dunbier pictured above was a gift from artist Gene Ha to celebrate
Dunbier's first day at IDW earlier this year. The piece is entitled "Scott Free"
