Boston Comic Con '09!

It's 11:42 PM as I write this so technically I went today and I'll be very honest with you.... I had a blast! I was solo for this mission and boy what a packed day I had at the show. I woke up surprisingly early with a lot of energy knowing that I would get to meet two of my favorite artists before the day was done. I headed for riverside to ride the T and soon found myself very lost in Boston. (Don't give me that look, I haven't been in Boston for years.)
I found the con almost a full half hour before it started, checked in and proceeded to look around the small Back Bay Events Center. I eventually wound up in the main hall where the big names were housed and found myself talking with Craig Rousseau of The Perhapanauts and Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane fame. He's a great guy, we had an awesome conversation about the series and he actually remembered me from New York.
Speaking on the Perhapnauts, Craig mentioned that he's finishing up the pages for issue 6 and it should be out sometime soon. After that, the guys are taking a small break to get 7 through 10 wrapped up. I for one look forward to a sales spike with the trade coming soon.

I have Jim Cheung news! I talked with him a lot which made me happy as he's one of my favorite artists. Anyway, he has the first two scripts of Young Avengers Volume 2. To escape the delays from the first volume, the guys are going to take their time with this one. Allan Heinberg is kind of focusing on his TV work but hey, Jim is halfway through issue 1! Also, the upcoming Free Comic Book Day issue has 24 new pages of content, pretty cool for a free Marvel Comic!
I also nailed down a little news from Mike Allred but I'll let that be heard via the podcast. Speaking of that interview, it's probably the best audio interview I've done yet. The Allred's are quite honestly some of the nicest people in the industry.

Then of course we had all the indie guys. As there were three tables, I was a constant visitor throughout the day. First, there was Tyler James and his comic Super Seed which you'll hear discussed in the upcoming podcast. He's a great guy with a lot of talent.
Then there was Shawn M. Corliss and his full color digital graphic novel Defending Tavyr which looks really great and shows an insane mastery of digital inking via photoshop. Shawn does it all himself and I'm sure you'll be hearing more from him on the site very soon as he's a new friend.
Also in attendance were the guys of Fat Cat Funnies who live up to the funny part of the name quite well. They had two books at the show; one being Distracula which is an interesting little book that I've only had to the chance to skim through so far. They also have their hero book Small Town Type which I also took home with me. Reviews for all these books are coming, I assure you.
Ian Nichols is the publisher as well as a writer/artist for the company and Jay Kennedy is an artist/writer as well. They were very personable and popular doing free sketches for anyone who bought their books.

Before I go, let me tell you about all the amazing stuff I found at the show as I'm pretty happy about it. I picked up three collections for cheap, a ten issue run of New Warriors, Mark Waid's twelve issue Captain America stuff and the Logan/Ben Grimm mini from several years ago. I also managed to finally pick up Powers, the first Sentry miniseries and Darwyn Cooke's issue of DC's Solo. There was an ice selection of comics in the retailer area of the show.
All in all this, this was a great con experience that left my messenger bag strap broken. You'll hear the podcast audio from the show very soon and I'm proud of both interviews.
