Life In Four Colors: S.P.A.C.E. Walkin'
Pictures From S.P.A.C.E 2009

The first wave of my coverage from this weekend's S.P.A.C.E show in Columbus Ohio kicks off and I'm going to just focus on the photos here. Raichal and I recorded about a total of 18 interviews over the course of the two day show, Chuck recorded several more over at the Comic Related booth and Kevin Hicks also managed to sneak in a very cool interview at the booth with one of the rising stars of the indy comic field.

A lot of details about the projects from the people in this photo gallery will be covered in those podcast interviews and I will also be doing a special review column highlighting several of the books I picked up at the show later this week.

Right now let's just get Lost in S.P.A.C.E. shall we?

Dave Arhar (of Penny Dreadful Press and official sponsor of S.P.A.C.E 2009) is ecstatic about picking up every issue of one of the most talked about book series out there right now. No Gods, written by Dustin Carson.

Dustin had a very successful weekend at the show and was even asked at the last minute to cash in on how well his book was doing by being asked to host not one but two panels Sunday afternoon.

Dave had a good show as well. Interest in both of his latest projects, Franklinstein and Uncle Samson and the Phantoms of Lost Liberty, seemed very high all weekend and having artist Jim Sullivan (from U.S.P.O.L.L.) at the Penny Dreadful Press table Sunday also helped. Jim's a real nice guy. Drove all the way from Boston! A huge Red Sox fan....like somebody else I know.

Joe and Ryan Morris from Torc Press. True Brothers In Arms.

S.P.A.C.E. is anything but a Lackluster show for Eric Adams. "I always do well at this show...there has been times I do better here than at Wizard World in Chicago." This show lived up once more to Eric's expectations.

Joe Shover "in the Zone" first day of the show.

Molly Durst sharing the Zonetrooper table this year.

Michael Marcus from the Hamtramck Idea Men hanging out with Sgt. Death.

Our pals from the Underground Video Network

Raichal interviewing the guys from Organized Chaos, Eric, Jeremy, and Brandon.

Jay Jacot and Ryan Claytor. Listen for interviews with both of these guys and watch for Jay's creator forum popping up on the Comic Related site in the very near future!

Not a Bad Place to be....hanging at the Comic Related booth with Chuck and Jon Hodges.

Fellow Kiss Fans Jason, Pat and Eric from Buyer Beware. Jason (far left) wrote a very entertaining Ace Frehley story in a very cool mini-comic he was giving away. They didn't last long. The Kiss Army was out in force at this show!

Erica, one of Raichal's friends from near by Otterbein College and a very talented artist in her own rite discovers the magic of No Gods.

Paul Schultz and Mike Indovina, the creative team of Chimera Strikes. Paul is also the creator, writer, and artist for the very successful Serial Squad.

Yes....Mike does have heat vision.

Eric Shook with his chain mail dragon

Raichal with the talented Billy Fry another young artist from Otterbein College who was at the Columbus College of Art and Design booth.

Taking up S.P.A.C.E. with two of the coolest guys in the cosmos, Dustin Carson and Kevin Hicks

Big news coming from these two guys! Something Wicked This Way Comes! Kevin must like working with writers intent on giving readers nightmares.

During the first day of the show Kevin did show me the pencil work he has been doing for the Rage For Order story the two of us are working on. Talk about wicked!!! Dang!!!!

Michael Marcus signing a copy of IFX #9 for me. Watch for the book review in a couple of days.

Outside shots of the Aladdin Shrine Center

Good friend Larry Blake, the Elder of the Kiss Army at the show and the very deserving winner of the S.P.A.C.E. 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award. Some very interesting stuff involving Larry is in the works. I'm dying to spill the beans...but I'll wait until things are a little more solidified. Make sure you read the three page story about Larry's 40 year contribution to independent comics in the program book for the show.

The entire Comic Related crew hanging out at the Old Bag of Nails Pub in Westerville Ohio Saturday night after the show.

Chris Hallbeck, creator of The Book of Biff.....a very funny and intellectual comic well worth checking out. I'm hooked. I love the highbrow, science fiction humor Chris packs in every panel of the series. If you find yourself liking a certain web comic about Killer Robots I think you will also appreciate Biff.

Check it out.

Yep....even this guy has to take a restroom break from time to time.

Talking to very talented creator, Stephen Hines. The man behind Hocus Focus, Clyde the Redneck, and Valedictorian U.S.A. A real cool guy. Has some really interesting stories in the works and shares a love for the same type of music that I do. In his own words "We could talk for hours."

John picked up a copy of Hocus Focus, I'm interested in seeing what Mr. Wilson thinks of it. Both Stephen and John are teachers and I'm curious to see if John has seen the same things that Stephen has in the world of education, which is what inspired Stephen to write the book to some degree.

Kings of the Cliche

Our neighbors from across the hall all weekend. Brian Hagen (left) had a great weekend. His book Soulchaser Betty was literally flying off the table all weekend. The other guy is Tim Broderick. His book (Cash and Carry) was just recently optioned for a motion picture. Tim gave a panel on how to turn your graphic novel into a film and Raichal attended it. She also interviewed both gentlemen.

The always entertaining Chad Lambert! This guy is always a pleasure to talk to and I can't wait until he drops by the Main Street Comics and Games store here in Springfield Ohio this coming June 13th!

Raichal hanging with the "Masters of Self Promotion" Victor and Mike from Freestyle Komics and creators of Hot Shot a super-hero comic with a story based in Columbus Ohio. Chuck interviewed one...if not both of these guys.

The guys from Mutant Cactus makers of the coolest Comic Related buttons. Pins, and magnets you will ever find. Check out their wares at the Super Fly Comics and Games store in Yellow Springs Ohio or hit their website.

Eric Wilmoth, fellow Kiss fan (there was a lot of us there) hanging out at his booth. Chuck did a great interview with this talented guy before he headed back to Detroit Rock City.

Speaking of talent...Lora Innes....writer, artist, and letterer of the very well received comic, Dreamer.

Ending the show with the guys from H!M.....George McVey and Michael Marcus

That's it for the photos....part two of S.P.A.C.E. Walkin' coming soon with more book reviews than you can shake a satellite dish at it!

Bill Gladman - Bill is a writer and illustrator and currently working on several different projects including the first issue of an ongoing comic book series (Prodigy), an illustrated fantasy novel (The Book of Noheim), and the first of four illustrated science fiction/fantasy novels (Jack the Rabbit, Living Legend of the Purple Plains) as well as a light-hearted on going mini-comic (Three Wise Men). Bill also pens a column for Comic Related and will be doing a mix of regional convention coverage.
