It takes much longer for an artist to draw a story than it does for a writer to write one. This simple fact led Portals Productions publisher Nic Carcieri to the concept behind Portals. It features four stories written by Carcieri and drawn by different artists. The first issue introduces each series which will continue in subsequent editions.

Kylie West is a science fiction story drawn by Rantz. After a sudden disaster in space, astronaut West finds herself in a strange new environment filled with danger.

Are We Dead Yet with artwork by Jason Flowers follows NYPD Detective Benedetto Andolini who has a secret. He's immortal. When a routine murder investigation begins his
secret may be threatened.

In Hot Wings a war is brewing between the Netherworld and our own. Four beautiful but deadly angels may be the only ones who can save us. This one is also drawn by Rantz, and featured on this issue's cover.

The London Fog with artwork by Joel Cotejar takes place in 19th century England when a new defender of justice emerges in the midst of tragedy.

Carieri is off to a great start with this series. Each story is well-written and the artwork from each of the three illustrators is excellent.

If you're intrigued with the book but concerned about ordering a small press comic that features continued stories; don't be. Carcieri works several books ahead, so he's confident his next several bi-monthly issues will be out on time.

In addition to writing comics, Carcieri is chairman of the United Fan Organization (UFO).

Take A Look Inside

Reviewer Bio

R. Krauss reviews small press and mini comics on Midnight Fiction, Poopsheet Foundation and Comic Related.

Been reading comics: since I started reading Marvel comics in Junior High School.

Review Bio: After several years I discovered titles like Zap and Bijou at a headshop and was seduced by the freedom and variety they offered. When the new-wave comix era sprouted from the seeds of the undergrounds, I quickly joined the ranks of other struggling cartoonists with phenomenally low print runs. After almost a decade of small press comix, I retired and made a solemn vow never to return. Several years later the Internet happened and over time many of my favorite new-wave cartoonists got online. The bug bit again and I started exploring the new crop of small press cartoonists. Today's explosion of small press comics is more exciting than any time I've ever seen.

Favorites: Papercutter, Not My Small Diary, Slam Bang, Comic Eye, stuff from Main Enterprises and Weird Muse, to name a few.
