"So," the wise man asked of the comic book fan, "why do people make comics?"
And if you think the answer to that one is simple, you are certainly not a comic book fan. There are as many answers to that question as there are days in the month. Of course all of us know the main causes that drive seventy-five percent of most creators; the desire to interpret the world around them via their talent. Or the quest for fame and glory, always a familiar reason to propel one into the world of graphic storytelling. Yet every so often you bump into someone operating in that rare twenty-five percent zone that are way more difficult to explain.
Some times people make comics just to have fun. Period, end of story. No illusions of creating the next independent best seller, no dreams of earning fan recognition and adulation. Nope. Just, these folks just want to have fun and share that fun with others.
Case in point, DUCHY DIGEST, an eight page pamphlet invented by writer Stevan Hager and his pal, Bruce Rosenberger. And when I say pamphlet, that's exactly what I mean. Calling this a book would be stretching that definition to the limits. Rather this is a stapled together little affair you know fully well was done on someone's kitchen table and then brought to a local country fair and sold to neighborhood kids and their parents.
Which is what the silly stories are all about, the Pennsylvania Dutch Amish, through the focus of one particular family, Papa, Mama and number one son, Amos Dingledoffer, known as the Pennsylvania Dutch Detective. In his first outing, Amos had to solve the mystery of the disappearing shoo-fly pie. Never mind that he solved in time flat with the help of his pet rooster, Duke, but plastered on the back cover is an actual recipe for traditional shoo-fly pie!!! And all of this silliness is all yours for just a single $1.
The first issue is dated 2004 and the latest, Spring of this year. So Steven and his gang of wild Pennsylvania have been at this for a while now. If you'd like to learn more about their brand of off-kilter, homespun humor, then I'd direct you their website, listed as,
(http://dutchydigest.tripod.com) to actually find his little gem.
And in the end, that's what it is. An amateurish little comic that brought a smile to my face. Now I'd totally buy that for a buck.
