I've been telling anyone who would listen to me for the past three years that we are in the midst of a pulp renaissance. New pulp fiction is exploding in every conceivable media from movies, novels and comics. GHOST ZERO, by the super talented Dave Flora, is the latest pulp comic to debut in recent months. It first appeared on-line as a free web strip and continues to do so. Whereas this first self-published volume contains two complete stories from the website and several pin-ups to round out the package.

The original twist to GHOST ZERO is that it actual beings where most adventures end. Charles Pallentine was a Shadow-like avenger known to gangland crime lords as The Revenant. When he is gunned down, his spirit rises from the grave and joins forces with a young man named Eddie Quick. With Quick's permission, the ghost is able to inhabit his body when called upon to wreak destruction on the forces of evil. The ghost of Charles Pallentine also delivers to young Quick two antique Civil War Lemat pistols that never require reloading as they fire energy bullets capable of putting down anything remotely tainted with evil, be it human or fiendish monster.

Flora's art is very dramatic, taking full advantage of the black and white media with just the right use of gray scaling, making the panels look and feel like old cliff-hanger serials.

There are two stories in this collection, Sea of the Dead and The Fleshless Legion. Both pit Ghost Zero against the minions of hell and are exciting, fast paced chapters in the exploits of this terrific new pulp hero. Whereas Anthony Schiavino is one of the finest designers working in comics today and that is quite evident by the old, moldy looking feel he gives the plain black cover with the yellowed corners. You can almost smell the pages.

All in all GHOST ZERO is a great book and worthy of your attention and support. This is old fashion pulp action at its best. This first issue is sold through Indy Planet on-line. Recently the series was picked up by Moonstone Comics and will eventually be released by them in various formats. A few GHOST ZERO chapters have already been used as bonus back-up tales in THE PHANTOM. Meanwhile, you can still go to Flora's GHOST ZERO site to see the start of a brand new story. Tell him, Fortier sent you.
