WHO AM I?
By Brant Fowler
So you're probably all wondering who I am and why I deserve a column here at the prestigious Comic Related website. Well, to be honest, I couldn't tell you. Probably because Chuck's just a really nice guy and has given me free reign to jot my words down for all of you to read and, hopefully, enjoy.
You may also be wondering why I've chosen to degrade myself by calling myself a wannabe in the title of this column. Well, if you DO know me at all you know that I have a series called Wannabez, so it only seemed fitting.
All that said, and after pondering why you even read past the first two sentences, let alone the first two paragraphs, I suppose I should tell you why I'm writing this column in the first place and where it goes from here.
Like anyone else, I was a fan of comics as a kid and it stuck with me into adulthood. Not only was I a fan, however, but I was also an aspiring creator, like many others around here and elsewhere. And so I thought, while not completely original, it would be cool to write a column talking about my journey from fandom to the annals of the creative society that is the world of comics.
Every other week for the foreseeable future I will be chronicling my personal journey through comics as both a fan and a creator. I'll be talking about the first comics I read, my aspirations to be an artist then a writer, my stints with various small press companies and studios, my jobs at comic news websites, and of course my self-publishing adventures, and much more. While I have talked about a lot of this stuff in part on my personal blog or in other columns I've written for other sites, I've never really gone full out in depth like I intend to here.
So I hope you'll ride along with me on this introspective journey and maybe even gain a little knowledge or insight in the process. At worst you waste 5-10 minutes of your time every two weeks reading my drivel. At best, you love me, adorn me with gifts and sing campfire songs about my greatness.
Too much? Yeah, I thought so.
I just wanted to take this time in this first installment to let you know what the column was all about and let you get to know me a litt... wait, what? You still don't have a clue who in the blue hades I am? Figures.
Okay, quickly, for those who don't know me, my name is Brant W. Fowler, or at least it says so in the byline. I'm a writer, letterer and editor who has worked actively in comics in some capacity for several years now. I am also an artist, but not a very good one. I'm mostly known for lettering, but Wannabez will hopefully change that. I used to run a comic news website as well as write for a couple, but none as charming as Comic Related I must say. And I love pizza, peanut butter and strawberry shortcake, but I'm not supposed to eat any of that stuff. Bummer!
So now you know what little about me you need to know to keep reading, or at least that's the plan. In two weeks the journey properly begins as I take you waaayy back to my childhood and what got me started on this crazy path to comics.
Until then, remember, cheese is yellow, the sky is blue and my shirt size is extra large because I like 'em baggy (Christmas is coming up you know).
