One thing that is required for screenplays to be read for screenplay contests is three levels of "pitch". First just a single quick summation, then a summation that is a short paragraph long, and finally a full synopsis. That might be a way to think about it, and by forcing yourself to sum it up in three different ways, you have to rethink your premise enough so that you also have a better grasp of it.
It used to be recommended that reading the quick summations that TV Guide would give movies is a good example for the amount of words the shortest version should be. |

I read this blurb once and really liked how it can summarize (and mislead)...
"A young farm girl travels to a far away land and commits murder." or two more that I used for a writer's group topic... (2 classics from the 1970's) "A young man follows in his father's footsteps and destroys and empire." or "A young man follows in his father's footsteps and builds and empire." -------------------- |

I read this blurb once and really liked how it can summarize (and mislead)... "A young farm girl travels to a far away land and commits murder." or two more that I used for a writer's group topic... (2 classics from the 1970's) "A young man follows in his father's footsteps and destroys and empire." or "A young man follows in his father's footsteps and builds and empire." I was recently listening to an interview Denys Cowan, creator of Static and co-founder of Milestone, did for SideBarnation, and he talks about how they pitched the TV show Static Shock to the WB network. Anyway, when they went to pitch it, their one word pitch was "Imagine Chris Rock, at 14, with super powers." The show got sold and ran for 4 seasons. Although, to this day, it still surprises me there was no video game spinoff, bar a half finished, cancelled Gameboy Advance game. |
