I have my own set of stories and properties all bundled up a playground I call Sparta Bay. To that end, I’m going to have my own imprint with SkyStorm Studio called Bill Nichols’ Sparta Bay Comics.

I’m planning to be at Wizard World Chicago this August (which is the weekend of my birthday, actually) and I want to put out a sketchbook of my Ursula character as well as other Sparta Bay properties. Several of the guys who contributed to our Hellgirl sketchbook from a couple of years ago have jumped at the idea of doing another one.

So, go to Comics Mentor http://comicsmentor.com and you’ll see some reference pics by the incredible Gary Barker to get you inspired...

If you get the notion to sketch something, just drop me a line at: comicsmentor@gmail.com and we'll talk.

This is a labor of love and a love of comics and creating. There are so many talented folk I know and I "know", if you want to contribute to this (which will be out at Wizard World Chicago), drop me a line.
I'm setting a tentative date of May 1st for sketches and illustrations for the sketchbook, so that I can get some idea of what will be in it. If you're interested in doing something, let me know, okay, and I'll put you down on the list.

I'm also looking at doing prints, bookmarks, sketch cards, etc. As well as having collaborators in the future. 

http://comicsmentor.com/?page_id=2145 is the page on Comics Mentor with some basics, as well as sketch contributors I have so far.

My original submission bothered me all night, so I made a new one. This is my "official" version, Bill. :-)

Here's what I've got so far. Sorry for the camera picture. My scanner appears to be kaput.

Need to tighten up the monsters and background then go in and ink it up.

Edit: I just noticed it looks like the staff/axe is behind her fist. Going to need to re-draw that.

Greg, that has a very Kerry Gammill feel to it--I LOVE IT! (Gammill will always be one of my faves!)

Thanks Fred. It's cool to see who folks may spot influence my work.

I keep seeing one of my heroes in it and I'm wondering if I should either:

- Draw more regularly to speak with a truer voice.
- Avoid influencing my creative energies with the work of my idols. (meaning, don't read comics before drawing)

When I started out I was considering doing an homage to Arthur Adams X-Men Annual #9 cover, but I'm still uncomfortable with doing that so this happened instead.

I'm looking into masking off the board with liquid friskett in the inking so I sling less white on the page after the fact. I chatted with Dexter Vines about his technique at Pittsburg Con a few weeks ago he mention he uses liquid friskett instead of adding white ink later.

Bill, throwing my interpretation in. I don't believe zombies can get surprised, though. An alarmed zombie made me laugh, but if it doesn't fit, I'll erase and rescan.. Kinda grainy cause it's on computer paper. Did it at work, so I wasn't prepared with any boards.

Thanks Fred, That means a lot! I think his droopy lids give him a little bit of "I swear, mom! We weren't smoking cigarettes!"
