And... WOW!

There seems to be a negative vibe associated with this new technology and I'm not sure what that's all about. It shouldn't be price as new tech is always damn expensive at first. Remember how much those flat panel TVs were when they were new?

The 3D TV I just tried was amazing. It's 3D! The movie they had on was Monsters Vs. Aliens and the stunning picture quality and smooth motion was only enhanced by the 3D element.

But they are claiming that the new blu-ray players can upgrade a 2D movie to 3D and this I wanted to see. I'm thinking this is most likely going to be the deal breaker for this new technology. I mean, blu-ray just 'officially' took over the market this past Christmas and it's doubtful movie fans are going to go out and buy new 3D versions of all their favorite movies a few months later.

So this upgrade idea had better work. Well, the guy found a 2D blu-ray of Cast Away and popped in. And, yup, it converted to 3D. By alternating from the 3D glasses to plain ol' eyesight, you can see the picture change. Without the glasses, you see Tom Hanks in front of the Kremlin. With the glasses, you're standing with Tom Hanks in front of the Kremlin!

It's not perfect however. The 2D upgrade does provide some depth of field but cannot compare (yet) to a 3D movie. Also the movement is a bit choppy, enough so that we're talking headaches if you watch it too long.

Bottom line, the technology is amazing and looks stunning. But it's not perfect. If they smooth out these problems, and the price eventually drops, then I think 3D is the way of the future. Time will tell...
