![]() After being eligible for nomination since 1999...ten long years....the Hottest Band in the World is FINALLY nominated to the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame. It's about time and long overdue!!! Gene sums it up best.... “There are disco bands, rap bands, Yiddish folk song bands in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but not Kiss,” Gene Simmons said last year. “I believe we have more gold records in Americathan any other group, but it’s OK.” The ballot for next year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class is one of the most diverse ever: the Red Hot Chili Peppers, LL Cool J, Kiss and Genesis are up for nomination alongside the Stooges, Donna Summer, ABBA, Darlene Love, Laura Nyro, the Chantels, the Hollies and Jimmy Cliff. Artists are eligible for induction 25 years after their debut release, so all the candidates released their first single no later than 1984. LL Cool J and the Red Hot Chili Peppers both made the ballot on their first year of eligibility. This is Kiss’ first time on the ballot, and their wait for a nod has frustrated the band and its army of fans. -------------------- "Reality is only for those who lack imagination" don't know who first said that....but it works for me!

While nomination and the eventual induction to the R&R Hall of Fame is a good thing, I happen to feel that it is only a small blip on the radar that is the legacy of KISS. Paul, Gene, Ace, Peter, Vinnie, Bruce, Tommy, Eric, Eric, and even Mark are part of a phenomenon that the world may never see again. Kiss was more than a rock band. They were a rock BRAND, the first and only of its kind (except maybe ABBA, but that's an isolated incident in Northern Europe).
While their songs were often cheesy, sometimes uninspired, and occasionally overtly sexual, their power cannot be denied. They may have never been the best at what they did, but they did it better than anybody. They understood who they were playing for and they never forgot what it meant to be entertainers. Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons are this era's Buffallo Bill Cody and P.T. Barnum. It was always about the spectacle and they never gave half of themselves. I've known people who weren't fans and seen them go to shows and the result was always the same... a profound WOW! And that's what Kiss is... a WOW on the face of pop culture. There have been many great bands in the history of Rock and Roll, but there has only been one that has left a stamp on this culture so bold and deep that a toddler (my youngest daughter) can be enthralled by the wonder that is The Demon, Star-Child, Space Ace, and The Cat. Kiss is timeless, it is ageless, it is old and it is new. It is all things... toys, games, comic books, songs, a stage show to blow the mind and assault the senses. It was reality TV before it existed (see KISS eXposed). In an age where legends are destroyed before they can ever be made, KISS defied the naysayers and built an empire... no... a pantheon that will remain as timeless and eternal as the gods themselves. Okay... that part may be a bit over the top, but boy would Gene be proud of the hyperbole Long live KISS! -------------------- |
