Scott and I as well as about THIRTY of our favorite customers (yeah that's how this LCS rolls) went to see Kick-Ass tonight, matter of fact I'm just getting in from catching the show.
Everybody that went with us ( a crowd that included Raichal and her boyfriend Levi, Gary Church, and Chris Metzger) enjoyed the film, those who didn't read the comics loved it more so than those that read the books, because there was a good deal that was changed, and I knew this was going to happen. But for everything they left out or altered they added something just as good, in most cases. I had read reviews that people were claiming the movie was better than the source material...I would have to disagree with that, but I still liked the film and would give it a 7 out of 10. Hit Girl stole the show and it was great watching the audience react to the action scenes with her in them. I did think the movie slowed down a little too much at one point, I realize the film needed to change gears but it slowed down just a little too much for me. And the ending was not delivered any where near as solid as the ending we got at the end of issue #8 of the comic book series. All in all a good movie...everybody had a great time and that's all that really matters. And we're all getting together again next Friday to see the Losers (because that's how this LCS rolls). I'm interested in hearing what other people who saw the movie thought. -------------------- "Reality is only for those who lack imagination" don't know who first said that....but it works for me!

The actress that played hit girl has a great career ahead of her, you can tell.
My only real problem with the movie came from a tiny bit of shoe horning the cop angle in. Most of the changes I really liked, especially Dave ending up with the girl in the long run. The original series ended in such a narcissistic way that i'm glad they made the changes they did. Hopefully it gets a god box office. -------------------- |

Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie. But even knowing what they changed beforehand didn't alter the fact I can't really accept three changes.
1. I thought the story was much better when Dave didn't get the girl. It was a lot less stereotypical that way...I'm so sick of the good guy getting the girl ALL THE TIME....it's only been happening since the written novel was created. 2. Hit Girl had to lay a guilt trip on Dave for him to step up and be a hero, so not like the character in the book. He was a hero (at heart) since day one. 3. And speaking of being a hero....the strongest part of the source material for me was ruined in the movie. Dave kills four people. And I didn't know that change was coming. He makes it through the entire eight issue run this movie is based on without taking a life....but he kills people in this film. That completely ruined the character for me. Thankfully Hit Girl and Big Daddy saves the movie from being a total waste. -------------------- "Reality is only for those who lack imagination" don't know who first said that....but it works for me!

Thankfully Hit Girl and Big Daddy saves the movie from being a total waste. The only one I agree with is two Bill. I rally hated Dave wanting to not go after them for what they did to big daddy. I will completely argue that the difference between movie dave and comic dave and the girl of his dreams is that in the comic she was flat out a bitch. Or at least that's how I read it. Dave did all the shit for her in the world and she gets some scumbag to beat him up at the end. I hated that. I think the movie changing that feels a little more genuine and honestly makes sense for two hormonaly driven teens. Oh and the scene where hit girl blows the kiss to dave was extremely cute and playful and showed me that she was still an innocent kid at heart. Also Nic Cage's "Big Daddy voice" was brilliant. -------------------- |

Oh....she was definitely a bitch in the comic. No argument there, but that in it's own twisted way still made the story more enjoyable. The hero not only did not get the girl, but the girl of his dreams was a real bitch.
Show of hands...who's fallen into that trap before? That's what I thought, yeah me too. Changing her character in movie didn't bother me as much as the changes made to Dave. The relationship with Dave and "this girl" is a different relationship than the one in the book, for sure...and there was some good movie mileage created by the change, but having the girlfriend be the same character that appeared in the book would have worked as well. True everybody would have left the theatre hating her....but what's wrong with that? Of course you lose the whole Dave having something to lose angle if we don't get the relationship we saw on film. The one thing I brought up I have the most problem with is making a killer out of Dave. Once again....I'm not buying that. As for the movie itself....it's a R-rated comic book film with no real star power other Nicholas Cage (who I thought did a great job) attached to it....the box office is destined to be disappointing...less than 20 million opening week end, getting beat by the How To Train Your Dragon film, in it's second week of release, that pretty much sums that up. But.....hey I watched it and liked it, and have from heard from people that went with us and watched the film and had not read the books....who have read them since...and not all of them agree with my opinion that the book was better. But I'm still sticking with it. -------------------- "Reality is only for those who lack imagination" don't know who first said that....but it works for me!

Well I haven't seen the movie yet so I'll have to reserve judgment till I do...but I will say that the comic Dave was fishing WAY out of his league with that girl. She was a rich little uber-bitch that he had the hots for and built his way into her world through her natural affinity for causes. He deceives her through the whole series making her think he's gay. So for her to be PISSED off and sick her boyfriend on the little creep who has been what she thought was her most intimate friend and who has now betrayed her trust...I can totally see her having him beat up. Makes perfect sense actually.

I have to agree with that. Worked great in the book and I missed that element in the film. I think she forgives Dave much too easy in the movie. And I think the original idea would have worked just as well (if not better) in the film, don't know why they changed it.
But you have to remember that Mark Mlillar approved all changes, he really doesn't seem to care what gets changed about his stories as long as they get made into films, look at Wanted. -------------------- "Reality is only for those who lack imagination" don't know who first said that....but it works for me!

Yeah I liked the movie Wanted well enough, but it was a HUGE let down to me as a comics fan. They could have done that comic panel by panel and made it just as good if not infinitely better than what they ended up making. I guess that goes to show you though, money talks. Miller insists on retaining some level of control over his stuff and it shows BIG time in the faithfulness to the source.

I love the movie so much. Already, I cannot wait to see it again!
I really enjoyed the comic book, I think that Mark Millar does no wrong as of lately and it's good to see his properties on the big screen. They managed to make the movie more violent than the comic. I thought all the acting was solid too. -------------------- |
