I was thinking that a new weekly web comic for the Comic Related site for 2010 would be a good idea. But I thought something that was wasn't humorous, instead how about something serious. I mean all the other web comics are funny but nobody said that web comics had to be funny, did they?
I would like to do an ongoing, weekly web comic that features a modern day private investigator. I recently wrote a story for Ron that featured a detective named Ravenwood, and I'm working on another detective story for Studio Akumakaze called Duality. I fell in love with this type of story while working on these two projects, so much so I have already commited to a second Ravenwood story. But unlike Ravenwood (which is a pulp fiction character set in the 1930's with hints of the supernatural) and Duality (which has a very nasty and flawed police detective at the center of the story, which is also a science fiction piece at the same time)....this web comic strip would feature a detective that works out of an office in Detriot. Set firmly in the "real world" He's not the world's best detective but he's no slack. He is not a "flawed" character. He's a pretty straight and narrow guy that does his job well. I think I have been running this idea through my head since I saw the Sherlock Holmes movie. The strip would be called The Price...a play on the fact the guy is a private eye for hire and his name is Simon Pryce. I think that keeping this strip black and white would be a nice touch. So I won't be needing a colorist. Give it that Sin City look...but the nature of the story won't be as dark and violent. Each story arc would run for 12 weeks....and the first one entitled "Yesterday's Burning" has been rolling around in my head now for days and keeping me awake at night. (I haven't typed it out yet but it wouldn't take long to do so) But for this thing to come about I will need an artist and a letterer. So if you can do either of these two things and this sounds like a project you think you would enjoy working on contact me and maybe we could pull this thing together. Thanks. I guess I should come clean about a couple of other things. "The Price" is the name of one of my favorite Twisted Sister tunes and "Yesterday's Burning" is the name of a song i wrote with the help of my brother about ten years ago, but unfortunately never recorded.
Music is always a source of inspiration to me...I can't deny this fact. I never saw this as a liabilty and this writing tool has helped me write my stories for decades now. It's never let me down so far. I don't believe it ever will. -------------------- "Reality is only for those who lack imagination" don't know who first said that....but it works for me!

That sounds like an interesting concept. I'd offer you my services and time but having said that I am not much of a comic/sequential artist.
Also, my lettering is still in the amateur stage and I don't think I am ready to letter an on going strip. However, If you need any graphic design work, or help with anything else let me know. As for music being an inspiration, I found it to be an inspiration with my work as well. I sadly have a large number of folders containing ideas for a comic book series that I doubt will ever be completed that was inspired by my favorite musicians/groups. Queen, Sinatra, and The Who, to name a few have all helped develop stories. Music also helps when I color as well, sometimes I listen to certain music to set a mood for a particular scene I am coloring. |

I sent ya an email in regards to what I can contribute as well, Bill.
As far as music influencing art, that is my prime influence. i listen to whatever will get me in the mood that fits the work i'm doing. When I want some chaos on page, i usually go for Nine Inch Nails. If i'm goin for something calm and detailed, I pop in Spiral Arm. (yes that's the music guest on Geek Street, plug plug, but I've been listening to his music for years.) And as far as a well rounded motivating music, I go for some Deep Forest. That's just to name a few. I believe music is integral to art. -------------------- Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/flapjac

Wowzer!!!
I just posted this info less than 24 hours ago and already "the Dream Team" for this strip, which may going through a slight name change, is already starting to take shape. I have already learned from working on New Comc Day that if I want to produce and be a viable part of something that is entertaining and of the highest quality possible...I had to surround myself with the best freakin' people for that strip. Wait until you see who's on board for this baby!!!!! Nuff said! -------------------- "Reality is only for those who lack imagination" don't know who first said that....but it works for me!

It's not together, yet. There is still some wishful thinking on my end as I wait for a few responses. But I am VERY happy about the two people who have already said they are in 100%.
Waiting for a yes or no from the letterer I have in mind and I have yet to talk to the artist in mind about the strip. He's going to be the hardest one to get on board, but I have my fingers crossed. -------------------- "Reality is only for those who lack imagination" don't know who first said that....but it works for me!

Sounds pretty cool, Bill. I'd like to see even more strips covering the different genres, ie Fantasy, SciFi, SuperHero, Western, Romance, Manga etc. Hit the whole demographic.
Had to do a quick edit. I just saw this was my 69th post. "Dude!" (Leans back and plays air guitar.) This post has been edited by ChadStrohl: Dec 31 2009, 09:29 AM -------------------- |

A whole lot more has been done on this project in one short day. Bill has a terrific cast assembled and a leading character that I think you are all going to enjoy.

Like Lisa, I am very much looking forward to seeing how it develops. I can't wait to see how goes from the original concept to becoming reality.

Just wanted to make it 100% official....Ron Fortier is on board on this project as well and we will be sharing the writing duties!!!. The two of us have hammered out the cast of characters over the last few days and the first three strips are already in the can.
The first story idea was somewhat structured before I talked to Ron, but he has been a tremnedous help in crafting the cast and keeping me focused on the script thus far. Strips #4-6 and an out line for #7-12 will be done before the end of the night and in the Captain's hands so he can give it all the once over. Working on this thing with Ron has already been amazing and I can't wait to see where he takes these characters when he steps into the driver seat as for as the story goes....I have a feeling he will be adding a lot to strips #7-12....which are not as fleshed out yet and I'm sure there will be times when he writes his own arcs with me along just for the ride. Chris Hoskins has already shown interest in inking the strip....talking to a letterer and penciler too. Should have answers from both of these guys before Saturday ends. -------------------- "Reality is only for those who lack imagination" don't know who first said that....but it works for me!

The creative team on Price for the Asking continues to fall into place.
Ron Fortier-co-creator/co-writer Bill Gladman-co-creator/co-writer Chris Hoskins-inks (this is 99.9% done so I'm pretty comfortable announcing this) Brant Fowler-letters Great team so far....talks are in the works as far as the artist. We'll have our answer tomorrow by the end of the day. Man this is exciting!!!! In the past, when I was still playing music I would always come up with a line up for the perfect band. A "dream team". And to be honest I still do from time to time...showing exactly how much of a "dream" this team would be because I know I would never be able to get all of those guys in the same band (without somebody killing somebody) When I came up up with the idea of who would be the perfect people to get involved with Price for the Asking I thought it too was just another pipe dream. And now it's so close to coming together I can almost taste it. I just hope this last piece falls into place. I'm personally damn excited about this strip and hope, once this "secret" penciler signs on, we can get him to roll out some character sketches to show all of you some idea
of what this concept is all about. Oh, and while I'm here, thanks to both Chris and Brant for signing on. Brant, have wanted to work with you since day one here at CR. Hot dog!!! This post has been edited by Ron Fortier: Jan 1 2010, 09:21 AM |

Strips #1-6 are now done and in the can. The outline for #7-12 (at least) are also finished. Ron doesn't want to restrict a story to only 12 segments. If it needs more, give it more. Trust me the ending we came up for this one is so freakin' awesome it's going to be worth waiting for no matter how long it is!!!
I'm putting the brakes on it for now until we get the art started. Plus I need to "bounce" back into a couple other projects. -------------------- "Reality is only for those who lack imagination" don't know who first said that....but it works for me!

EEeeehawww!!!! That's my whoop of joy over how this thing has evolved. Bill whipped up a really dandy mystery to kick off the first Simon Pryce adventure and I am so psyched to see this thing come to life once a week, here at CR. Hey, Chuck, can we get the Friday slot? Am thinking it would make a terrific end of the week send off.
But Bill, get them there artists duded to sign and get drawin', please!! The anticipation is killing me. |
