Finally, some news on the character's revival. Did anyone else send in pitches?

As much as all this is exciting and fun, has anyone else but me noticed that in this "hat-less" age we live in, there doesn't seem to be an
artist out there who can draw a decent hat. These young dudes try to do a fedora and the results are sad. Now we have someone trying to do an old fashion flying cap and the first cover image in this series looks...well...sad. I remember way back when the running gag was young artist couldn't draw feet. Now it seems to be hats giving them fits. Jay's South American artist, when doing the western series, did excellent cowboy hats. |

I hadn't really thought about it, but that's quite true. I always liked The Shadow's chapeau. Now that was a hat of all hats in my book. In that case, drawn wrong, it would be an utterly different character.

Recently my good pal, artist Dario Carrasco of Canada started drawing what is intended to be a new pulp charcter from the 30s and the sketches he did of the hero were awesome..until you got to the top of his head..where he is wearing the goofiest looking hat in the world.
It's suppose to be a fedora, but Dario simply can't get it right. Amazing. Any yes, the key to getting the Shadow down was always in being able to capture that marvelous slouch hat he wore. |

I never thought about how difficult it must be to draw a hat. I've seen professional artists unable to get the ubiquitous ball cap right, too.

While on the topic of the Shadow, check out Erik Burnham's sketch found here. Erik is our newest forum family member as we welcomed his web comic "The Down Side" to our forum over the weekend. I'm finding he's quite the talented sketch artist as well!

Chuck Dixon once said he thinks artists could use a book on hats. Some could use a book on one hat -- the policeman's cap.
But hey, they are a hard row to hoe, especially fedoras and such at different angles. When you get it right, though, it feels great. -------------------- Check out THE DOWN SIDE and Erik's Sketch Blog @ Burnhamania.com and then discuss it right here at Comic Related's Down Side forum! Erik, I notice in your post you mention...
"It’s because of that damn look — it’s so iconic. So cool. I would love to get my hands on the character… to write or to draw or to both. It’d be a great bit of fun. Blazing 45s. Coal black eyes. Blood red scarf…" Just to let you know you are in great company here. Some of the real legends of pulp (starting with Ron Fortier and many of his friends) bump around this forum on a very regular basis. There's a lot of iconic goodness hidden around the posts here. I think you'll be pleased! -------------------- Chuck Moore

Leave it to Dixon to come up with a solid idea like that.

I agree here, totally. And again, this is all a generational thing. Artists today grew up pretty much in a world where men go hatless.
When you think back to the 40s, everybody wore hats, from gangsters with fedoras, cowboys and their ten gallon wonders and the military heroes like Blackhawk. I even went so far to make a certain green hat the central focus of one of my old Green Hornet comic tales. Was tons of fun to do. You want to feel old? Ask any teenager you know what a haberdasher is? |

At first I was unsure whether this was an April Fool's gag, but the legendary Murphy Anderson, who designed the original box art for the action figure is contributing to the project.
