I agree completely on the points of racism in popular media, but I have to admit that a racism discussion was not my intention. I was commenting on how similar so many movies are, especially comic films. And that from the offerings of comic adaptations coming out this year, X-MEN FIRST CLASS seemed like the most interesting of the bunch because it dealt with bigger issues.

It may or may not discuss racism directly (I guess can't say with certainty until I see it), but it at least does metaphorically through the prejudice of mutants, and that's better than ignoring it altogether. Especially better than magic space hammers.

Veering back on topic, I'm looking forward to this.

Competent director and interesting looking trailers have sold me on it.

In fairness, I was never overly fond of previous X-Men movies. They were good enough, but IMO still too many concessions made to Hollywood and general audiences. Now that Marvel has a bit more stock/awareness with the general public it seems we're seeing fewer compromises.

Now if only they'd do something about Mystique's atrocious skin complexion. Yes, yes - a chameleon see! Not required.

I blame Avi Arad. The guy would have put Spider-man in a tutu if a Hollywood director wanted him to. He was a toymaking exec whose main interest was selling toys and merchandise, yet not focusing on the quality of the film. Never got 'it' that the film will sell the toys, not the toys selling the film. There were a number of projects under his supervision that went to hell. Daredevil, Fantastic Four, MTV Spider-man and Spider-man Unlimited spring to mind. They were baffling in their ineptness. Many of these had planned merchandise that got canned, and Daredevil, a Marvel movie that was supposed to have action figures and games, wound up with a number of cancelled game projects, no action figures, and one Game Boy Advance game, which came out with little fanfare.

No wonder Marvel is talking about rebooting the movie. Did not help that the first one sucked immensely.

Alot of entertainment outlets are saying that January Jones unborn baby is the result of an extra-marital affair between her and married director Matthew Vaughan. Hopefully it is not true, but if it is, I am sure Fox and MArvel will not want such bad publicity potentially harming the potential Box office of their film. Extra marital affairs very often damage a film, as can be seen in the case of Mr and Mrs Smith, which flopped because of the publicity surrounding Pitt and Jolie.

Hopefully this is not the case, because nobody wants to see someone cheating on their wife, or the see an illegitimate kid come out of it. The difficulties that kid will go through would be unimaginable, especially in the public eye.

I'm hearing a lot of people saying that it is very much a prequel to Singer's original 2 x-men movies. Which is really not at all surprising to how much he was part of this film.

I am beyond excited to see it.

That's the first I've heard of it.

I don't follow the gossip rags / TV shows, and all the stuff I've been seeing has been about the movie.

To be fair, Mister & Mrs Smith was also a stinker of a movie. So it's hard to blame celebrity gossip for deep sixing a stinker in the first place.

If anything, the relationship was the courtesy flush. tongue.gif

Looking forward to this movie, but damn - media over saturation. There's so much news about it coming out and videos I've just tuned out. I don't want to spoil the movie for myself by watching all these tid bits.

I wasn't much of a fan of Singer's flicks. They were okay movies, but I didn't care for his action direction. Which is crucial since part of the reason I'm going to see these movies is for the over the top action. Matthew Vaughn has proven himself to be the better action director, and that's the primary reason I even kept an eye on the movie.

Glad to hear it's turning out well.

Good to hear. X-Men: Last Stand was terrible, and Wolverine Origins was so-so.

I'm glad to see this one shaping up well.

I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Far better than the Senger movies.

It took me back to the X comics I read in the 80's in a way, and that's all I'm really looking for. And I'm beyond caring about liberties taken in movies because Marvel comics are already awash in their own brand of stupid.

Singer, not Senger and honestly it's ironic you're saying that as he was basically hand in hand with Vaughn during the full production of this movie. not to mention that it's right in line with the first 2 movies, easily. wink.gif

I don't read hollywood gossip. I've seen Bleeding Cool posting articles about it, and I've gleaned from them production on this was a mess and it still turned out better than the total of Singer and Ratners work for me.

I could care less about critical and box office reception. Did the movie speak truth to the comic fan in me? Yes.

Who is Azazel? Is this a new character for the movie, or a recent comic character?

And who was the Tornado dude?

Azazel is Nightcrawler's dad. At least they got that whole getting him and Mystique together to make Nightcrawler happen. biggrin.gif

I hated Emma, but I knew I was going to. They used her like she was used in the early comics, she was a blunt instrument and eye candy so I can't completely fault them for that. Honestly I think January Jones' inability to emote any kind of emotion killed her too. When Magneto has a hold of her she didn't even look remotely scared... although technically he shouldn't have been able to do what he did when she was like that anyway. (I'm trying desperately to not give away too many details for those that haven't seen it, can you tell?) She just had no range, no depth. That scene when she's talking to the guys through the glass, there should have been more smugness there. *sigh* but like I said, I knew I wasn't going to like Emma so I wasn't terribly disappointed.

The girls and I are going to talk to talk about it one the show for sure.

She was Whu'? She looked like a hot babe with Barbarella hair to me! She had this slight thing she did which seemed to capture that old fashioned Bond girl to me... or maybe I was too busy being enamored with the hidden rooms and old fashioned reel to reel computers to care about emotion. Or maybe I was just too angry at the gratuitous shock value profanity from a certain hairy guy...and for some reason the first thought out of my mind when I saw Azazel was-- who's the red Klingon?

Actually that was pretty in character profanity for the character in question and the scene was the best cameo in a comic book movie in a long time. (this is coming from someone who loved the Hawkeye scene in Thor)

They were allowed one F#@% in a PG-13 movie... they used it to the best effect. It wasn't just a random placed cuss for the sake of shock. It was actually placed for the sake of the character. He would ACTUALLY have said that (and might have in comics and I just don't know it.)

As for Emma... unfortunately that was part of what they were hoping for, "look at the pretty girl, ignore the fact that she can't act her way out of a paper bag."

The more I learn about January Jones the less and less I like her.

I was being nice to her in my review.

that character has used the word "fuck" on multiple occasions, especially when the book was relaunched around 2001 in the Marvel Knights banner.

Which is why my young kids would never see the film, or get a copy of Marvel Knights. And I definitely won't be purchasing the Blu-Ray.

Dude, spoiler tag that character name. Unquoted so I'm also not a ninny. There are people who haven't seen the movie yet or may not see it for a while.

Internet courtesy, pass it along. wink.gif

My buddy had an issue with Emma in the movie, from his account Emma was the power player in the original Hellfire club. Unfortunately I always tuned out in those issues as a kid because it was a bunch of people in boring old fashioned clothes talking and not doing much of anything. tongue.gif

Kids should not be seeing this movie. Take the kids to check out Thor instead.

This movie is very adult in nature and writing, I really think for once the PG 13 rating is completely justified in the level of who should be seeing this movie. It's definitely not a movie that has kids in mind.

Good on you for not bringing said kids to see it sir.

Though why you'd be letting children read a marvel knights imprint book in the first place is confusing to me. It had an MA rating on it and was basically the MAX imprint before said imprint existed and full of people like Wolverine, the Punisher and Daredevil which all at the time were not geared towards younger readers at all.
