Spike sets up shop in Smallville The WB network has announced that Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel's James Marsters (Spike) will be joining the cast of Smallville in the upcoming new Season 5 of the series. "Marsters plays college professor Milton Fine, alter ego of the uber-villain Brainiac. Possessed of a vast, superior knowledge limited only by his hubris and emotions, Brainiac comes to earth armed with a secret about Clark's biological family and the truth about Krypton's demise. Brainiac's presence in Smallville will have a devastating effect on Clark and Lex's already deteriorating friendship." -------------------- Chuck Moore

CANADIAN NATIONAL COMIC BOOK EXPO: SMALLVILLE'S JAMES MARSTERS James Marsters, formerly Spike of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, said he is enjoying the clarity of Professor Fine/Brainiac, who he is playing in the upcoming season of The WB's Smallville. "The thing I really love about this role, is that I have a very clear objective," Marsters said. "I know my objective from the very beginning and it's going to carry me through the whole season. "That was the problem with Spike. In all honesty, that character had no objective 90 percent of the time. (laughs). I would have to make it up. (In Spike accent) 'I've come in to kill Xander again, but I've changed my mind.' "To find your objective is like a gas pedal for acting. And if you can find that objective and play it honestly, it's like 'Wham!' And if you can't find it, you're mired. I'm really happy about an objective the audience suspects and the other characters don't know. It's the hidden agenda of a zealot -- and it's really interesting." Marsters was addressing a "V.I.P." paid crowd of about 125 -- nearly all female -- at the Canadian National Comic Book Expo in Toronto on Friday. Before answering questions, he performed about a dozen songs. Marsters said he has done scenes with Michael Rosenbaum's Lex Luthor and Tom Welling's Clark Kent for the upcoming fifth season. "Boy, I get to mess with Lex Luthor," Marsters said. "I remember on Buffy, whenever they wanted a new character to look cool, they would come and beat on Spike. Because if he got one over on Spike, he must be very cool. There were times I was just like, 'Here we go again. Beat up on Spike.' "And that's kind of happening for Mike. He's having to undergo getting topped. Not because of acting, just because of what the words are. The script is designed for my character to top him. I've done two scenes with him, and he's kind of getting irritated (laughs). "It's got nothing to do with chops. It's just the way the producers want this thing to roll. I've got to say, he's great. I've never know what's going to happen when I look into that guy's eyes. Wow!" As for Welling, Marsters said: "Tom is really cool. If any of you have crushes on Tom Welling, go right ahead. He's more intelligent than you might think. We don't want to believe that really beautiful people have intelligence, but sometimes, they do. Tom's one of them. He's very funny, very intelligent." Asked if he would make Season 5 of Smallville better than Season 4, Marsters joked he had to answer that question carefully or face the wrath of the set on Monday. "Every new actor on a show hopes that their contributions will make the show better," he said. "And I am fully expecting that to happen, as every actor does." A solid Aquaman on Smallville roundup A summer beach party at Crater Lake takes a dramatic turn when Lois (Erica Durance) hits her head while jumping into the lake. Before Clark (Tom Welling) can save her, a mysterious swimmer, Aquaman, a.k.a. AC (Alan Ritchson), comes to her rescue, out-swimming Clark and leaving him baffled. Professor Fine (James Marsters) tells Clark that Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) is behind a covert operation manufacturing weapons. AC attempts to break into the Luthercorp Marine Center in an attempt to destroy one of Lex's torpedoes and is captured by Lex. Smallville' soars again "I have seen the first three episodes of the season," wrote Marder ahead of the "Smallville" fifth-season premiere, "and I promise they are as good, if not better, than any this show has ever done. If you could notarize an e-mail, the preceding statement would be notarized." The 'Dukes' of 'Smallville' For going on five seasons, John Schneider has played Clark Kent's foster dad, Kansas farmer Jonathan Kent, on The WB's teen-Superman drama "Smallville." That whole time, the question has been raised: When will Tom Wopat, Schneider's co-star on the hit 1970s-'80s series "The Dukes of Hazzard," make a guest appearance? "Somebody finally heard you," Schneider says, calling in from the show's Vancouver set with Wopat at his side, "and here we are." An episode called "Exposed," airing Thursday, Nov. 3, reunites Wopat and Schneider, who played cousins Luke and Bo Duke, a pair of modern Robin Hoods in rural Georgia, in the classic series. Wopat plays Sen. Jack Jennings (a nod to the "Dukes" balladeer, Waylon Jennings), an old friend of Jonathan's who comes to Smallville to seek his help in an upcoming campaign. "That was a great idea [to pair them up]," says Tom Welling, who plays Clark. "They were like two kids in a candy store, being together. You could tell that a lot of the old gags came up again. "I used to watch 'Dukes' all the time growing up. John's going to hate me for saying this, but I caught it in syndication because they began that show the year I was born." "The difficult part is," Wopat says, "they're yelling for 'Tom' on the set, and we've got two TWs here." "I only work with TWs," quips Schneider. For "Dukes" fans, the episode contains a few inside jokes. "The senator's taste in cars is a bit classic, shall we say," Schneider says. "He drives a '69 Dodge Charger. Imagine that." Does anyone know if this season of Smallville is the last? There will be a seventh season of Smallville which is set to begin very soon (September 27th). According to Kryptosite [link] from back in May... Now that the sixth season finale of Smallville has aired, people are already wondering who will be back next year. We don't have any official confirmation but this is the buzz that we're hearing: - Kristin Kreuk WILL be back as Lana Lang. That milk truck couldn't have been more obvious, could it? We're assuming she's back for the full season, but there's really no way of knowing. Unless, of course, we're hearing bad information, and Lana really is dead... - As far as we know... none of the other characters are in danger of permanent death. John Glover has said in an interview that he may be returning to Smallville a few weeks later than everyone else, but still: Everyone should be safe. - Unfortunately, Annette O'Toole has left the show, and "Phantom" was Martha Kent's last. Maybe we'll see Martha again next year; let's just hope that if she does, she'll do more than bake cookies and flirt with Lionel. - The CW cast list for Season 7 includes Aaron Ashmore as Jimmy Olsen. We assume it's a 13-episode contract. - Since Justin Hartley's Spellbound pilot was not picked up, perhaps we will see Green Arrow and/or the Justice League again. (Please, Al and Miles? Please?) Keep those questions coming! -------------------- Chuck Moore

![]() The Black Canary Comes To Smallville The CW on Friday unveiled Alaina Huffman as Smallville's Black Canary. Over on the Comics Continuum, Rob Allstetter has unveiled 11 preview images featuring the Canary who will appear in the episode scheduled to air on Feb. 7th. Here's how The CW describes the episode... "While secretly working for Oliver (guest-star Justin Hartley), Chloe (Allison Mack) intercepts one of Lex's (Michael Rosenbaum) project files, but she is attacked by the Black Canary (guest-star Alaina Huffman), a mystery woman with a subsonic cry. Dinah Lance, Black Canary's alter ego, is a conservative talk show host who is working at the Daily Planet and clashes with Lois (Erica Durance). Lex convinces the Black Canary that the Green Arrow and his team are terrorists so she launches an attack on the Green Arrow and Clark (Tom Welling). Meanwhile, Lois discovers Oliver's secret." ![]() No Chloe Sullivan for Superman ComicBookMovie is reporting that DC Comics's VP Dan DiDio revealed last week that the long-awaited plan to add Smallville's Chloe Sullivan to four-color continuity has been nixed. DC Comics had announced in December that they would introduce a popular character from the TV series Smallville into mainstream comics continuity. In fact, the synopsis, at DCComics.com, still reads as follows for Superman #674, due out March 12: "Clark and Lois...[have] relatives coming to visit--namely, a certain blonde cousin of Lois's from Smallville. It all sets the stage for a major new addition to the cast in next month's anniversary issue! Can you say 'Chloe Sullivan'?" Judging from comments made by DC's VP Dan DiDio, it appears that the plan fell through. "Chloe is an exciting character on the television show, and we had hoped to work her into DC continuity," DiDio told Newsarama last week, "but unfortunately, the stars did not align properly, and even though we had announced it, she will not be appearing in any of the issues of Superman or Action Comics." Portrayed by blonde cutie Allison Mack, Chloe Ann Sullivan was created expressly for the WB's Young Superman series Smallville. She served as a "Lois Lane archetype"--the show's dogged investigative journalist--and has existed independently of the canonical DC Universe. Chloe's "anointing" as an official DC character had been long sought by die-hard fans, and excitement was building toward Superman 674. As some 'Net posters have commented, this event was getting them to buy Superman comics again. Others, however, were a bit relieved by the latest announcement. But, while there are no official details as to why the "stars did not align properly," fans are theorizing that Busiek's new version of the character may have strayed too far from the model, or even that Smallville creators Al Gough & Miles Millar pulled the plug on the idea. ![]() Smallville Adds Episodes With the Writer's strike officially over, networks are blazing forward in trying to get new episodes out for the remainder of the season, including the CW who is ordering up more episodes of several of their hit shows. TV Week announced that there are new episodes coming for Smallville, Supernatural, Reaper and One Tree Hill. Five to six episodes are being ordered for each series to wrap up their current episodes, with the new episodes likely to begin in April. Fans of Smallville can take comfort in knowing that between now and April, there are still three unaired episodes from before the strike began. Source: SuperHeroFlix -------------------- Chuck Moore

Just taking the time to share this exciting moment with fellow fans. Is anyone is excited as I am about the new Season. Chloe busted, Lex and Clark going at it, and Lana, running away. I can't wait. I tell you super hero drama is the best. Oh, and don't worry if you missed season 7, I placed the link below for the site to get it. It's a really cool site you can take clips from the seventh season of Smallville, along with music and sound effects, to create your own trailer. Then you can submit your trailer to a contest where the prize is a nokia phone and a TV. Check it out

I've had an off and on relationship with Smallville. I always intend to watch it, usually miss the start of the season as it tends to debut differently than the other networks and end up playing catchup. By the end of each season it's usually one of the final things I watch out of my Tivo cue. That said, I tend to enjoy watching it when I finally catch up with the show. It doesn't hold the same spot of enthusiasm for me as, say Torchwood, Primeval, Heroes or even the Sarah Conner Chronicles but it's good when I've exhausted my "die-hard/must watch" shows.
By the way, thanks to Russell Burlingame, here's some promo info sent out from the WB on the upcoming DVD release (which is also touted above)...
