New 52 Aquaman Options

Okay, you have me hooked (bad pun) what is the book like and who is the artist?

And I have to say, I have never talked trash about Aquaman. Always like the guy, but it just seems that he picked up a bad rep because of that really bad show Superfriends. (I have done gone and ticked off a generation with that). Similar to Fredric Wetham and his claiming Batman and Robin were gay lovers.

Hate how one person ruins it for everyone.

Superfriends was a terrible show... in retrospect. But watching it as a kid, it was awesome. Simpler times, simpler times. heh

Haven't checked out the book yet, but now it sounds promising.

Read it... wow, really enjoyed that. They made it fun by making part of the fan opinion of the character as part of the story. Nicely played, DC. Nicely played.

I don't think it's underwater per say but I think it's just how both of them are mermaid greek god type characters? That just doesn't play to a 16-30 male demographic very well and doesn't seem relevent to our culture. I'm looking forward to hopefully a very different take on aquamarine life.

Aquaman #2 is another pretty good comic, this time heavier on the horror elements as The Trench comes to the surface and attacks a sea side town.

I've always been a big fan of Aquaman, at least in the comics. I loved the Peter David era of the character, but I was hooked long before that. I think the main problem with the character has always been that for one he doesn't mesh well in the grand scheme of the JLA where they tried to stuff him half the time, and after he beats up environmental damaging humans no one knows what else to do with him.

In the new book, there's no denying that Reis is just insane art wise. The guy reminds me so much of Neal Adams I almost lose my mind, but that's all to the good. He's got that epic feel to his work, the smooth movement, and the great character expressions. I'd have to say of all the new 52 I've read this one is by far sporting the best art, and is the polar opposite of the Green Lantern title.

Story wise...I'm no sold yet. I like what Johns has done elsewhere, and I expect that he's laying the ground work for something really cool before long, but this issue seems more like one long Big Bang Theory joke than anything else. The cops rag him, the people in the diner rag him...we get it. I did enjoy the little min-flashbacks, the moment with his dad in the diner and on the rocks...that was awesome. I'm glad he's back with Mera FINALLY, but it's curious that he's spurning the throne and Atlantis. I won't go so far to say that's out of character because Arthur has always ben a child of two worlds and never seemed really at peace with the trappings of a king, so maybe he needs a new path.

All in all, pretty good stuff. I haven't read issue 2 yet, but I can see myself taking a chance on it, no doubt.

Actually, Atlantis did not enter Aquaman's mythos until the silver age. One can argue whether it was a good or a bad addition. Recently, I've been leaning toward the latter.

I find it intriguing that Aquaman does not... suck. I'm actually enjoying the book, which is the first time I haven't laughed about Aquaman since Peter David did a run on the series back in the 90s.

Aquaman #3 introduces a new character, Steven Shin, a scientist obsessed with Atlantis, while Aquaman and Mera try to take the fight to the Trench.

Aquaman #4 is a great ending where Aquaman puts the final kibosh on the Trench. It's nice to get a story from DC with a beginning, a middle, and an end.

This is still one of the titles that makes me mutter, "YES" when I see it pop up on ComiXology for purchase.

Aquaman #5 has the sea king stranded in the desert. Pretty good for the most part for a story told mostly in flashback. Aquaman demonstrates a new power.

Aquaman #7 rveals a bit about the hero's past while leaving more questions.
