Goose Gossage got in. Probably would not have if he hadn't played for the Yankees, but them's the breaks.
Jim Rice barely lost out. Too bad for him, but he'll likely make it next year. It seems like he's been in the running forever. Isn't there some limitations of chances you get? Mark McGwire: The sportswriters sure taught him a lesson. He may have to wait clear till 2010 to get in. That's real punishment. |

Yeah, I saw that on the sports news yesterday, amidst the political stuff. And agree about Gossage and his pull being a Yankee. Like it or not they maintain their historical mystique which does work in players' favors like this. As for Rice, I just don't know. I'm getting the feeling he's gonna be the perpetual bridesmaid here. Although I believe there is any set time limit for admittance, the problem is that every year
you have a brand new crop of eligibles...and that tends to push out the also-ran further and further away from making the cut. Most New England sports writes don't really believe Rice is going to get it. As for McGwire and his fellow steroid cronies, well, I'm sorry, but cheating is cheating. Glen, I honestly don't think he'll ever get in now. Nor will Barry Bond. I've been watching the Roger Clemens stuff on TV, and personally, I think he's lying through his teeth. But then again, we do live in a cynical age, don't we? Thank you, Richard Nixon. |

I stand corrected, Glen. I just read over at the Boston Red Sox site that Rice only has one more year. Apparently once you are put on a ballot, you have 15 years to make it. This was # 14 for Rice. So next year is do or die.

Ron, I actually agree with you. However, I believe the sportswriters will eventually capitulate and let these guys in. Not voting them in on the first ballot is really not a punishment at all. A number of players didn't get in on their first try, but who remembers who they are? Once you're in, you're in; that's it. If they're going to put McGwire and Sosa and Bonds and Clemens in, they might as well let Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson in as well. |

Which is exactly my point, Glen. If Rose and Shoeless Joe aren't ever going to be get in (the latter a real injustice against a guy no hard
evidence ever substantiated wrong doing) then neither should these steroid users. To me, its brutally cut and dry. Our children look up to sport figures and its time, we in this country decided if we are going to condone cheating or fair play. You can't have it both ways. |
