I forgot all about this thread for a while there, Greg! Actually, I haven't tried that technique- YET. I will give it a shot.

Hey Anthony,

Not sure if I've asked this in our process talks; but do you use photo reference when whipping up your pin-ups?

I've been mulling it over, but I'm too lazy. Plus I don't want to carry around my swimsuit mags. tongue.gif

I use every kind of reference that I can! Comics, photos, movies, digital models, etc (YES! I SAID IT! I USE DIGITAL MODELS! biggrin.gif)

The only time I've seen digital reference go horribly wrong is with Brandon Peterson. I used to be a huge fan of his mid career work and his new stuff is unrecognizable, and strict referencing of computer generated mannikins with no re-interpretation by the artist just looks like he traced over a Poser/Maya 3D model.

If you've got to use reference - I want to see it re-interpreted through your eye as an artist, speaking generally here. Not to you specifically.

The funny part is if you look up some of his con sketches you'll see he's still got his mojo. He's just done a lot of really dull digitally referenced covers for Marvel.

On the upside - he's getting paid handsomely no doubt. tongue.gif

Well that was a tangent!

Bottom line, I don't care if you using reference; so long as I'm not sitting at the computer one day and realizing you just redrew a Cori Nadine pic and just changed her skin tone so now she's She Hulk. tongue.gif

Yeah. OUCH! That looks... busted. It's definitely a problem there, that not knowing where to stop. That was me not so long ago, anyway. You HAVE to go back to live people and photos in order to get the natural effect of gravity on the figure. Digital models really helped me get a better feel of the human figure than I had before, but there's always a trap to fall in that just doesn't look natural.

So that's what you've been up to. biggrin.gif

That last Thanos picture is pretty awesome. Who is the guy to his left?

Thanks, Greg! The guy on Thanos' left is the NEW Power Man! He's actually stronger than Luke Cage, I think, and he actually generates POWER! http://www.comicvine.com/power-man/29-71023/

Oh, okay.

I had heard about him, but I've never seen him.

He may be stronger, but he's definitely not cooler looking. biggrin.gif

He's even cooler now that he's adapted the Mister Clean look! Ugh, man, I can't stop looking at that awful Brandon Peterson illo. The more I see it, the more awful it looks to me.

Really strong work Anthony.

I have to agree, sadly, that that Petersen piece is just stinkingly bad.

How did the guy go from this:

To that crud above?

I didn't see an image, but I've seen his other stuff. This was probably a couple hours rush work.

I was initially hoping that was true.

But then I saw the cover to his book, Illuminations 2011, and he repeats his use of poser/ daz. And it still looks crummy.

I've posted a link, because I don't want to spam your board with images.

Illuminations Front Cover

It's pretty darn annoying, to be honest.

Oh boy, yeah. I'm glad that I got over trying to use these figures as my last and final reference for my drawings. They can become soulless. Hmmm. I'll keep looking up to people like Stanley Artgerm Lau. At least when he uses a photo in his background he makes it HIS. http://fav.me/d2nx81m

The thing is, when you use the mannequins, which is what poser/ daz figures are, you manipulated them to suit your own needs, which is what you are meant to do with reference. Use it as a guide, and manipulate it to suit your own needs.

What Peterson is doing, and what Land also does, is just pose it, trace it, and leave it at that. And that is ugly and lazy in my eyes.

I could never feel as if the work is really mine unless I had a hand really shaping the figures. There are digital artists who do a wonderful job of it, like Loic Zimmermann here: http://www.cgliberty.com/best5/2007/148/148_3b.jpg
