I recently came across one on THIStv, a film from the 60's called Fearless Frank, which featured Jon Voight pre-Midnight Cowboy as a low-budget superhero tackling super villains. Are there any other obscure superhero films that are worth seeking out?

Don't know if you've seen it, but back in 1980, John Ritter and Ann Archer did a superhero film called "Hero at Large". It's a little simplistic, but still an entertaining watch. You might want to check it out.

Hero At Large is a good one! As I recall, it's the one where he is the first 'real world" superhero when, dressed as a superhero property, he stops a robbery. Kinda of a dramedy as I recall... but it has been a loooong time since I've seen it!
Another weird one is The Return of Captain Invincible from the 80's with Alan Arkin as a 50's superhero who HUAC caused to go into hiding, and he becomes an alcoholic... and Christopher Lee is the villain! |

If you going to bring up Starman (a wonky flick btw, as I recall it may have been edited from a TV show), how about the obscure Japanese superhero tv show AKUMA-KUN aka Devil Boy:

Probably because nobody liked that awful film. Who here has seen The Shadow? Or does that not count as obscure? I'm talking about obscure movies, btw, not obscure characters. |

I would say that Steel and the Shadow, as relatively recent films from Hollywood, aren't really the obscure I'm looking for, but they may be obscure to some folks who never saw them or are younger than my geezerly age! By obscure, I'm looking for superhero films that are pretty darn weird/rare/out there that seldom get talked about in fan circles. Cause, that's just something I like to do, find out about the width and breadth of the genres I dig (this of course from somebody who likes weird comics like the Inferior Five, Rima the Jungle Girl, Prez, Brother Power the Geek, etc) Another obscurity: the 60's era superhero satire Mr. Freedom: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Freedom http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uf8WIlyKu6U |

Generation X maybe? Or Justice League of America starring David Ogden Stiers. I've still not seen the Ogden Stier's film, I guess I need to track it down at a convention! Another obscurity: Exo-Man http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076008/ |

How could you forget this guy? ![]() If you're going to bring up this guy, you have to include MST3K stars "Prince of Space" and Space Chief of "Invasion of the Saturn Men." This latter, of course, being the film that tied with "Manos: The Hands of Fate" as the worst film that MST3K ever did. It was so bad, when the villain from "Prince of Space" showed up on the Satellite of Love, Mike and the 'bots were happy to see him. |

"Mr. Freedom" is a great film! It's more a French satire of American patriotism.
