I thought I'd make the leap from lurker to active Comic Related participant by posting some of my recent art doodlings. I've just finished an Avengers #1 sketch cover with one of my favorite comic book villains, Thanos.

I have a couple of more sketch covers in the works and will post them here as I get them finished.

Bravo!!!!

This is stunning work and being a Cosmic Marvel junkie I am very impressed with not only your skill as an artist but you taste and knowledge of the characters you picked to work into this beautiful cover!

Thanks! My first comic was a copy of Warlock #14, so I've been a cosmic Marvel fan since I was a kid. As soon as I can pick up another Avengers blank sketch cover, I've got a Captain Marvel pic I want to do next.

Can't wait to see that!

Ah----Warlock # 14.....the 2nd part of the Star-Thief story (who recently popped back up in the Rocket Raccoon back up feature in the Annihilators stuff-if you're still into Cosmic Marvel)

Warlock #14 is a great book to start at your life as a comic collector. You can't go wrong with a Jim Starlin classic as your first book!

This time around, I had the urge to doodle one of my favorite Spider-man villains, Venom, on an Avenging Spider-man #1 blank sketch cover. I think I may be addicted to the sketch covers...anyone know if there's a help group I should be attending? smile.gif

(check it out on eBay, too!)

I am opening back up for commissions again (after a year or so off). I'll be doing sketch covers, cover recreations and even new comic/illustration work. You can find out a bit more on my commission list/process over at: http://elfsong-mat.deviantart.com/ - feel free to email or message me if interested.

Latest sketch cover, this time the Hulk #1. As you can tell, I'm stuck firmly in the 70s/80s in terms of the style on these.

This one is also up on eBay if anyone is interested: Hulk #1 on Ebay

My latest commission piece is a WW2-era Captain America on a Captain America #1 blank sketch variant cover. I love doing these things!

You can't beat the Krackle. It drives me nuts when people do it wrong.

Really like your drawing/inking style. Sort of a modern Jim Starlin and with excellent brushwork.
The only thing I saw that maybe wasn't up to par was the captain america-his chin juts out weirdly.
Great stuff man. Have you done any pro work for the biggies?

I did a bunch of comic work in the 90s - Elfquest, Thor, Man of Steel, Spectacular Spider-man, etc. - before I moved on the writing/directing for film/tv.

Today's sketchcover piece has the Thing squaring off against the emerald titan, the Incredible Hulk. Did I mention that I'm completely addicted to doodling on the Marvel blank sketch variants? The things are a lot of fun. This cover, along with all the others I've posted, is done completely with a #4 brush...I've found the stock on the sketchcovers to be a bit inconsistent, so the safest and fastest way for me to work has been to do a quick pencil rough and then finish it all with a brush.

The thing (and the Hulk, too!) is up on eBay for any interested. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=120831209901

I also wanted to say that I am open for commissions through the end of the year. I've got a couple of spots left and still have a few blank sketch variants left. Right now, here is what I've got (although, I do have more coming in this week, including more Avengers, FF, Thor):

Avenging Spider-man #1
Captain America #1
Wolverine & the X-men #1
Uncanny X-Men #1
X-men #7
X-men Schism #1

This is probably going to be my last Sketch Cover piece for 2011...this time around it is Wolverine versus the Brood aliens on an X-Men Schism #1 blank variant cover. I absolutely loved the Brood when they first appeared, as drawn by Dave Cockrum. The guy was an amazing character designer and artist.

This piece is up on eBay for those interested. Check it out!
