Hey guys! Been a long time since I visited, so I thought I'd drop in and share a couple of things that I've done. I've recently converted to drawing digitally, and here are my first two completely 100% digital illustrations:

The first one is Makena, a fictional Hawaiian demigoddess of my own creation who descends from the Opelu-nui-kauhaalilo line of Hawaiian chiefs and commoners. I do not know if Opelu-nui-kauhaalilo existed, but he is said to be the son of Pele and Kamapua'a.

Makena will one day grace the pages of a comic book.

The second is Pele. This one is actually a test sample for Stephen Smirl, from Big Dog Inks. I believe that he writes and draws Island Tales. This is not my design, and is based more on the version Pele that is shown in the Island Tales comic book. Kamapua'a and Pele were lovers, and after he left her, Pele would sing love chants to get him to come home, but her chants were in vain. So with that in mind, I free-styled this one: I drew Pele lying on her back pining for Kamapua'a, hoping for the day that he would return to her.

I will be adding backgrounds to this one.

Oh, and critiques are welcome! Just make sure they're constructive. Don't just say: "Oh man, you suck!" Tell me WHY I suck; I'm still striving to get better everyday.

REally liking these Carl, but the only critique I would have is the head of the second image. Something went wrong between construction and final drawing, as the head looks distorted, rather than giving the illusion that she is looking up.

Few examples of what I mean.

Hope these help illustrate what I am critiquing. I felt that it would be more constructive to use images to show what I mean. smile.gif

Thanks. My intent was to have the head tilted upwards, but have her eyes looking downward. Not sure I accomplished the feat completely, but somehow it makes sense when I look at it.

EDIT: Looking at it again, perhaps I needed to place the eyes slightly higher up, and round the outside angles of the eyes a little more downward, thin her lower lips, and then emphasize the prominence of nostrils of her nose more.

Thanks guys! I agree, the coloring is really awesome, and that's thanks to Brett Evans. His coloring complements my style very well.

To be fair, your line work is very indicative of where you want highlights and shading to be.

Thank you!

Hopefully, when my either one of my books are ready for submission, I can convince Brett to be a part of my creative team.

Then we can take begin our quest for world domination!
