Kickstarter... Has it worked for you? Options

I'm considering a kickstarter campaign to fund a book I'm helping with. For those of you who have run campaigns, how many were successful and do you have any advice for someone trying it for the first time?

Agreed.

I view Kickstarter as something of a "charity", which is bad wording, for creators who may not otherwise get a project out there. Be it a video game, comic book, film, music - whatever.

I don't donate to my local college radio because I want a tax write off. I donate to them because they turn me on to new music that I wouldn't hear otherwise.

It would be nice to get something out of the Kickstarter donation, but it's more so me feeling good about helping someone with a cool idea birth it. Unless Kickstarter begins to meddle with the creator's rights, copyright, etc. then I'll have a problem with it.
