Hi folks - I'm Sam Costello, the writer of Split Lip, an horror webcomics anthology.

Split Lip is designed to scare and to provoke thoughts. Rather than using horror archetypes like vampires or zombies to tell action or adventure stories, it seeks exclusively to scare, unsettle, and disturb.

Split Lip eschews those traditional horror archetypes in favor of trying to create dark moods, original characters, and frightening experiences. It is influenced by, and will appeal to fans of, Japanese horror movies, dark literature like that written by Joyce Carol Oates or Dan Chaon, and comics such as Uzumaki and Strange Embrace.

Split Lip just finished serializing its 17th story, marking over 200 pages of free horror comics on the site. We've been publishing new comics pages nearly every week since Oct. 2006.

The latest story, Se Perdre, is about a couple in post-World War 2 Paris. When the man disappears, it seems that no one in Paris but his fiancee remembers him or is willing to help. But what's the real reason for his disappearance?

The story was written by me and drawn by John Bivens ("Comic Book Tattoo," from Image).

Here's the first page from the story so you can get a taste of it. Click on the link above or the image to get to the site to read Se Perdre or any of the other 16 stories there.

We start serializing a new story next week: "Straw Men," with art by Gary Crutchley.

Outstanding! Thank you for posting. I will certainly go check it out.

Does the Straw Men story in any way tie into the concepts presented in the novel of the same name by Michael Marshall?

Thanks very much Chuck!

Straw Men is not related to the Michael Marshall book; they just share a title. I only just became aware of that novel, after this story was already completed.

Bump to say:

The new Split Lip story, “Straw Men,” has begun serialization on the website. It is written by me and drawn by Gary Crutchley. It’s the story of a down-on-his-luck farmer who, after a gruesome crime, unleashes an inhuman vengeance on the world.

Read it at http://www.webcomicsnation.com/splitlip

The first installment of the new Split Lip story, Ingress and Egress, has been posted at the Split Lip site. The story is about three guys living in a dirty basement apartment in Boston and the dangers of arguing over things that aren’t yours. The story was written by Sam Costello and drawn by Jason Ho.

The third installment of “Ingress and Egress” further ratchets up the tension between the roommates in the dirty, disgusting Boston apartment, setting the stage for the violent climax. It was written by me and drawn by Jason Ho.

The fourth installment on “Ingress and Egress” is now live at Split Lip. I this installment, we’re just one step away from the horror at the heart of the story – it all comes out next week. As always, this story was written by Sam Costello and drawn by Jason Ho.

Here's the first page of the latest update.

Click it to read the story.

The full story of “Ingress and Egress” is now live at Split Lip. Discover what horror is lurking in the apartment – even in the people living in the apartment – and what effect it has on the residents. As usual, the story was written by me and drawn by Jason Ho.

And watch for October’s special 2-year anniversary celebration. Not only will we have a contest (details coming late in September), well be featuring four stories in the month, rather than just one. You’re going to like them!

We’re celebrating our two-year anniversary at Split Lip this month. We’re doing that with one new story a week and a contest in which you’ll get free comics if you win.

The first new story, “Bad Radio,” tells the tale of a friendship struck up over ham radio in the 1970s and the dangers inherent in not knowing who’s on the other end of your microphone. It was written by Sam Costello and drawn by Nelson Evergreen, who drew the earlier Split Lip story “The Tree of Remembrance.”

The new story, and contest details, are at http://www.webcomicsnation.com/splitlip

Here's the first page of Bad Radio. You can also click on it to be delivered to the story:

Awesome Sam,
I'm just starting to read all of these stories.
Digging all of the different art styles.
Some excellent Halloween reading.
I'll tear through these and do a write-up on OpWound in a few weeks.

Thanks for the kind words, Jay! Glad you're digging Split Lip at this time of year. :-)

Love the look of the Optimum Wound stories, BTW - I read a few earlier this year.

Keep up the good work!
