whats up Gang, i found out about this about 2 hours ago and we've got to bull together and put a stop to it or where all going to be looking for a new line of work.
Orphan Works Bill it's a bill being "fast tracked" to make it legal for big Stock Image Websites to steal art, illustrations, family photos, anything hosted on US based servers. How? well the long and short is, we don't have $4500 bucks to Trademark each of our images that we have up on the internet which is what this bill is all about. I've been spreading the word about this all night and i'm dog ass tired. you can read some well worded 411 about this here More Info Link it's got all the important links to whats going on. |

Thanks for the concern and making other artists aware of it. One of the biggest problems of our internet age is the fact that Artists of all types are being exploited out of their work by all sorts of piracy, and its been harder and harder to guard against it. Here's another link to the GRAPHIC ARTISTS GUILD which will give you more info:

BTW, I'm listening to the interview right now, this is typical of the type of Marxist thinking that we pay our kids to learn in college.

I'll never use Google again, either. BTW, anything Google related is coming off of my computers right now. Too late? I really don't care. It's a shame that Bill Gates is behind this, too. What do you expect, this looks like a serious move towards a Marxist corporate control over EVERYTHING.

Okay.... well millionaires getting their way...that's not really news....
what can we do? I mean that seriously, not facetiously. One of the articles was entitled "Time to Act", but that was from 2006. How $)#(*ed are we and what can we do NOW? -------------------- Jake Sullivan

several things have come to light about this through out the day today, that had the "panic button" not been pressed might not have been brought up.
1. this version of the bill might not see the light of day, because of how one sided it is. 2. this is the second bill of it's type in the last few years to rear it's ugly head. the first one was voted down in 2006. 3. after talking to someone who's being following it for a few months, he expressed that this bill would not negate current copyright laws. so if your an artist and you've got the work in print before it's up on the net, should this bill pass, your print copyright would hold up in court. 4. this bill is being presented as a way to smooth out unclear areas of internet copyright laws, it's still one sided and a very real threat even though it doesn't have a number or is not on the docket for 2008. that doesn't mean it could not be reworded and combined with a bill already on the docket for this year. 5. bill 1959 was scoffed at late last year, bill 1959 is a bill to stop "home grown terrorists" however how it reads is it will allow the government to control what content we can put on the internet, websites and blogs. as of the 7th of April 2008 it's still moving forward and has allot of support. so bill 1959 is mostlikely going to be a reality. do not take the Orphan Works Bill lightly, Internet Copyright reform is going to happen at some point very soon, like it or not. if we the artist, don't voice our concerns and let the big companies trying to push through bills similar to this know we are watch... we are going to be in very big trouble. |

Leader: contact you state congress person and senators that the first step, let them know that this proposed bill is wrong and only benefits big business.
this will also let them know that whatever bill on this topic that is pushed through needs to work in the favor of the little guy, NOT Bill Gates and big business. |

We're already in trouble. Apathy is the emotion of the decade. One of our biggest problems is that, the world has turned into a place where you can literally get something for nothing, which is why I'm so against just downloading ANYTHING I want from Torrent sites. Once upon a time, if you couldn't get something, you were not meant to have it. Piracy has gone global, thanks to computer technology, and lack of principles. Millionaires have always gotten their way as a matter of circumstance, but this is something different. And the fact that Bill Gates and Google's team is putting so much money into this is nothing more than a power ploy, and most of us are dumbly passing through purchasing new computers and gadgets and giving them all the power that they need. Take a look at the television situation of next year and how we all need an "upgrade" to digital television or a box for our current tv to receive the new digital signal. I really don't believe for a minute that we need all of this stuff. It's just big government coming to swallow all of us up. And I'm not only pointing the finger at U.S.
Really, which one of us really needs to be so "connected" that we're paying through the nose for worthless gadgets like cell phones that connect us to the internet and more tv and more music than we could ever hear in our lifetime? Wow, I hope I don't start a heated argument here. -------------------- |

Great if you get something together maybe post it up so folks can copy it, that would help get things moving. again there is little chance the Orphan Works Bill will see the light of day in it's current form.
However something very similar WILL and it's not going to work in our favor regardless. Unless the government knows we're paying attention then it's going to work in the favor of people like Bill Gates and that can not happen. |

The problem is that we're being advised not to start writing just yet because no one's going to listen yet. We should get on these email lists right now and get the word out to as many people as possible to watch. I just changed my home page to Ask.com. I'm not using Google anymore. PERIOD. Screw that. From now on it's going to be an us against them power play. -------------------- |

Flairbrusher: your right, and people who don't want to deal with the reality of all this are already trying to present counter point to why "we" don't need to worry. siting the fact that they haven't heard about it on the new or read about it in the paper so it's not really a danger.
the media works for the government and big business, so their not going to, it's not in their best interest. WE have to be the ones to voice this is unexceptable. it's easy to just sit back and torrent media and screw around all day with gadgets, work our asses off so we can buy **** we don't need and watch our rights slip away. infact thats what our government is counting on... it's how gas prices have skyrocketed, how 9/11 happened, everything that is wrong in the past 8 years is because we are so worried about stuff that isn't worth our time. Reality TV, HD, Iphones whatever. part of why this is happening is Bill Gates. He's not the richest man in the anymore. "Vista is dying" microsoft stock is dropping from the failed yahoo buy out. our country is in deep **** right now, and it's going to drag the rest of the world down in with it unless everyone becomes aware and pulls their heads out of the sand. |

ok, last message on this, because i couldn't delete this posting or edit it.
it appears I've been fooled as have many other folks across the internet as to the true purpose of this Orphans Bill and what it's really trying to do. i've provide a link to someone who's much smarter than me who will break it down, i'm sorry for whipping you guys into a frenzy and raising your blood pressure. maradydd.livejournal.com this happened because even though i've been researching it for about 24 hours with lack of sleep, certain terms where miss understood because I'm just stupid i guess, and so is about 5000 other people at least. |

Well, I think that it's better to get up in arms about such a thing, since, as I stated earlier, the world has become a pretty cold "take it now, whether you paid for it or not" place, thanks to internet technology. As it is, when you post anything online, you risk someone just ripping it off anywhere in the world, for example, what is to stop someone in China from stealing an image one of us has made, and printing it on a ton of Chinese product, used only in China? Will anyone here know about it? Noooo!! Will anyone here really be able to do anything about it? Noooo!! And so, you risk. But for the government to let something like this really happen- is it beyond the realm of possibility? Of course not! And with the current hatred of Capitalism (well, it's good if the haters are profiting, but a bad bad thing for everyone else- let's go back to the age of Socialism in Russia) Typical of the pot calling the kettle black.
It's good for us to keep our eyes open anyway, as we need to be business people. There still is an abundance of people that want something for nothing. And there are still an abundance of artists out there who are too afraid to defend themselves, or price their work. Boy, did you get my ire up. I guess my boycott of Google is over now. Unless, of course they are still pushing millions of dollars into this idea. -------------------- |
