Man... all great entries for this one. It's a toughie again.
I think for the sheer brutality of it, I have to give the nod to Mr. Fixit. Dredd is a head breaker, first and foremost. Utmost dedication to the law, and nothing else. Hurrah! -------------------- HEY, KIDS! WHY NOT CHECK OUT MY CRAP? ER... I MEAN... WONDERFUL WORK. YES... THAT'S WHAT I MEANT.

Wow, I am impressed with the entries to this contest. They are all strong! Good work fellas! Now for some comments!
Greg's picture: A solid pose for Dredd... Loaded with detail finished with excellent Ink work. Two things I think I would like to see... A little heavier line weight on the undersides of Dredd... I think it would help set apart his right arm from his chest. Also watch out for Judge Death (if i remember correctly) in the background. They are almost blending to much... Maybe a lighter opacity? maybe a slight blur? All in all a very strong piece! I love the detail you have put into his right arm. Great job. Anthony Lee's pic: I have to admit when I saw you post the pencils i was blown away already. When you posted the inked version I think I fell in love. That is some of the nicest inking I have seen in a while. Thick and strong. I would really love to see the entire character or some sequentials done this way. Mr. Fixit: Yeah I drew this, but I'll still crit it. I like it... I think all in all I like the plain inked version more...? Not sure. I have some fascination with drawing people getting punched through the head... So it just seemed like a good time to use it. I hate the guy in the foreground. There is something about him that bothers me. I had fun drawing it though and thats all that matters right? Hamlet's dredd: Sweet! Another picture with loads of detail's and executed really well. The ONLY thing I would like to see differently on this is once again thicker inking on the undersides. (yeah i have a thing for strong inking) Thats it. This picture kicks all sorts of ass. Mtopolski's Pic: Damn. just damn. Thats a sweet picture. Dredd rocking dual guns with a cucumber in his pants! Good job! I have lurked the past few contests... and when Dredd came up I HAD to join in on the fun! Congrats to everyone for making some seriously badass pictures. See you on the battlefield next time! (p.s. my crits are only my opinion... please don't take offense to them... I am only trying to help you all achieve your full potential) -------------------- huh? what you say?

well i think i'm doing a bigger disservice by saying nothing then speaking my mind. my hope is that "each" of you will take it in the correct light.
1. Greg Forry, nice idea, Dread, Death, the badge, the finishing/inking bothers me, i'm all for raw/rough stuff... but this almost seems crude... maybe it's the tools your using i haven't studied enough of your stuff to put my finger on it. 2. Anthony Lee, nice inking and it's a really nice dis-embodied head, not real exciting, it's smack in the middle of the page, looking straight at us. as nice as the draftmanship is, it is it's boring. If you want to draw big heads, cool, lot's of guys draw big full page headshot. I'd say use a more dynamic shot, 3/4 quarter, something, anything but straight on. 3. Mr. Fixit, this one looks pretty cool, i think it's more because of the color so it jumps right out from the rest. it's got action and blood coming right out of the page. i would have liked to ether see more of Dread or some backgrounds, a brick wall anything to activate that negative space to the right. maybe cropped the picture tighter so we get a sense of how close quarters they are fighting. 4.Hamlet, i don't normally like standing around poses, but that doesn't bother me. the line weights in the inking and the fact that you cut Dread off at the knees is just killing this one for me... he looks like an amputee, i'm not trying to be an ass, thats really how he looks to me... knee pads might have solved that. Mtopolski, i'm not really sure how to say this "tactfully" so i'm just gonna come out and say it. As nice as this looks, the bottom half makes no sense to me, if you didn't want to draw his feet, then crop it, but all this extra... stuff, just isn't needed and hurts the rest of the image... that and it really bothers me that i've seen this before... a punisher cover or batman, i could be wrong. I wouldn't have bother to mention it, except, someone sat me down once when they caught me doing it and told me to knock it off. i'm a better artist now because they did. "Everyone" just because Michael Turner doesn't draw feet doesn't mean folks trying to break in can get away with it. learn to draw feet, or at least learn to fake it. yes it's hard and a pain and not real fun, but i can not express how many times i've seen editors use something at silly as that reason to brush off artist trying to get work. again, crits can seem to be rougher then they are intended, none of this was meant to be hurtful. hopefully you all understand that and this helps you become better artist and reach your future goals. |

mtopolski: i shouldn't have left the last part of my crit on the reply, i've been having computer problems all morning, and that was uncalled for on my part.... unless i was willing to spend the time to prove it, which i'm not.
you have allot of talent, don't sell yourself short and don't half step, which is the real message, for everyone. i go way, way to far sometimes, that because most people don't go far enough... my apologies. |

kuzuSkot -
You didn't offend me and don't worry about the apology. Just thought it was a bit stand off'ish that you would assume I ripped off the doodle and that I can't draw feet or worse, that Michael Turner has some kind of influence in my life, not saying he is not a good artist, just that he is a bit after my time! As for the picture itself, I feel like it is ok, like I said before, 80% is what I wanted, the inking, ok, wish I would of used my quil tips instead of markers. As for the pose or the actual over all effect, yeah, looks like a Punisher picture, don't know about Batman, but Punisher sure does. Throw a guy shooting into an empty spot off page with a bunch of bullets and other chaos going around in the picture and it will look like a punisher doodle any day. Plus I thought it kicked a$$ As for the actual crit... no problem, I don't mind them at all, been doing this a long time and have heard much, much worse. So don't sweet it, call my a$$ out when ever you want, thats goes for everyone here! I might comment back, usually not, but in this case, I thought I had to defend myself a bit, but just a bit... Peace MAT (Mark) -------------------- Peace

Hey, man, no offence taken... I had the same thoughts when it was done. Still, as I said, I didn't have time for a full body or action shot, and only inked it because I couldn't let it go. But I still wanted to play, and it was more to join in than to win. And, as expected, no votes for my head shot, as everyone else quite rightly drew me off the board. No one loves me... -------------------- HEY, KIDS! WHY NOT CHECK OUT MY CRAP? ER... I MEAN... WONDERFUL WORK. YES... THAT'S WHAT I MEANT.

the michael turner comment was for everyone who doesn't draw feet
i understand not everyone was able to put in 100%, it's tough to find the time and it's not easy. but i also understand that if your not given input you can't get better... if people tell you it's great, it doesn't really help you, even when/if it is. i could name "pro's" that have never got any better... but that's another tread  and yes, tone is harsh via messaging |

Man now I'm sorry that I didn't vote for Hamlet. I went with Mr. Fixit. I love Hamlet's Dredd, but for me the brutality of Fixit's entry FELT more like Dredd I read.... that said Hamlet's entry doesn't deserve a goose egg.

Hey guys. Thanks for the feedback. With these contest i'm focusing on technique. This is the first time I've inked like this and was surprised to see the effect. Thanks Leader for the almost vote. But I'm trying to understand what you mean by doesn't deserve a goose egg. The reason why I submitted it around 12 30 am is because i did the whole piece the last day or night.

A goose egg is the shape of a zero. Your entry should have been voted upon.

Thanks for the education Jake. That term is probably basic stuff I missed.
With these votes i see it as "truthful" feedbacks. No votes or a goose egg means I need to improve. -------------------- Stop the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China!

I think of these contest as practice, to see what works and what doesn't, plus to see how long it takes me to do a doodle in a pinch, since usually I wait until the night before or the day of...
By the way, Hamlet, I like the pose and the finish is cool too, seems to fit together... Peace MAT (Mark) -------------------- Peace

well... i think that the way these contests should be approached is we should take ythe opportunity to draw something cool... AND to gi ve each other critiques on what we feel everyone else needs. So from now on i would LOVE to see everyone giving pointers and tips to the entries. I think in the long run it would help all of us accomplish our goals to become better artists.
