Just got back from seeing Iron Man 2 and, although I liked and recommend the film, I was a little disappointed.
First of all, folks saying the story is hard too follow, really should simply pay attention because the story is not the least bit confusing. That's not to say it's overly simplistic, but if you pay attention to what's on the screen it's not rocket science. I found the film just lacked all emotional depth. I agree with Van that with so many storylines stuff into it, I feel like I watched a 2 hour trailer for the film and have yet to see the actual movie. The fact that Stark has a drinking problem for about 90 seconds kind of highlights what I'm talking about here. Sam Rockwell's Justin Hammer is the only character who you really get a sense of. They spend a good chunk of time setting up Whiplash so he can spend the last half of the film smirking in a lab. The Stark/Fury stuff was the best stuff in the movie and I'm glad we actually got to see some part of the film given room to breath. Compared to the rest of the film, a whole movie just based on setting up the Avengers would have been preferable as these scenes really worked. And I'd like to call a moratorium on Iron Man action sequences taking place at night!! I'd like to actually see what an Iron Man fight looks like. The quick cuts will no doubt be clearer on the DVD and the smaller screen. Everything just blurs in the theater. Downey was good but not great like in the first film. There's a lot of solid humor in the film and the end sequence, just before the credits, had me rolling in the aisle and felt like it really captured the spirit of the first film perfectly. All in all, a good movie, not a great one. Although the story was easy to follow, it really was too jam packed with characters and great actors who had to be given face time. Can't really comment on the effects as you can't really see anything with the damn night scenes. Also, for you AC/DC fans you hear 2 songs in the film, not the 15 that are on the band's cash-grab "soundtrack" . Loved the bonus scene at the end. |
