Ron dropped me an e-mail earlier today sharing the first illustration by Rob Davis from the new Captain Hazzard - Cavemen of New York and said it was okay to share it with you here. It's a great little sneak-peek for one and all!

Thanks for posting this, Chuck. After I finish a novel and turn it over to Rob, it's really fun to try an envision which scenes he'll use to
do his illustrations. He normally does 9 a book and pretty much spaces them evenly throughout the text. So when I saw this one show up
as the first one, I was really thrilled. Nothing like hitting the ground running with an immediate glimpse of our main antagonist. Oh,
and since Mark Maddox is painting out cover (as usual) he was tickled to get Rob's version of the caveman, which in turn helps him with
the cover depiction. With fingers crossed this book should be out in Feb. 08. Onwards and upwards.

As Ron explains in the gallery, "I thought you might all enjoy seeing artist Mark Maddox's first pencil rough for what will ultimately become a digital painting to our latest Captain Hazzard pulp novel, CAVEMEN OF NEW YORK."

What a great first shot. Can't wait to see the final digital painting!

Hey, Ron, are we getting closer to a release date for CAVE MEN OF NEW YORK?

Sadly, Mark, we just have to wait a wee bit longer. The entire book is finished except for the new cover painting from Mark. And that's the
sticking point because Mark, a really reliable and honest pro, has become extremely sought after these days. When he takes on assignments, he warns folks that he will not alter his schedule, so their job has to wait its turn in the cue. Which is where we are at now.
Mark is wrapping up another cover gig on a time crunch (the publisher has to deliver it to Diamond in two weeks). The second Mark turns that job in, its on to CAVEMEN OF NEW YORK!!! Once its finished, Mark, it won't take us more than a week to get it to Cornerstone Book Publishers. My best guess, the book will be available at the end of this (March) month. Fingers tightly crossed. Ha.

After long months of waiting, artist Mark Maddox turned in the cover to CAPTAIN HAZZARD - CAVEMEN OF NEW YORK and the book is
at long last available. I've just sent Chuck the full Press Release, and posted the completed, gorgeous painted cover in my gallery here.

My comp copies of CAPTAIN HAZZARD - CAVEMEN OF NEW YORK just came in and once again, I'm that kid on Christmas morning.
Mark Maddox's wonderful pulp-pure cover is just simply fantastic and holding this book in my hands is so much fun. Hmm, better get
busy writing #5!

Well, the balloon has burst again. I just found out tonight, from a reader, that there are two pages in the book out of sync. Somehow the program that took my Word Document script and translated to the book formatting, took pages 182 & 185 and switched them around.
In other words...the script on page 185 really should be on page 182 and vice versa!!
UNBELIEVABLE!!! There is no sane explanation for this.
I've notified Rob and he immediately corrected the files and has sent them to the publisher to both correct the files at the printers and those at our Lulu on-line store.
This is so damn disheartening!!

Unfortunately, that sort of thing happens far too often to self publishers. A darned shame.

Having had a night to sleep on this SNAFU, I realize you can never fully protect yourself against these kind of things. Whereas we are correcting it, folks with that error book now have a first edition collectible that should increase in value the second the new, corrected edition comes out. Always a silver lining somewhere. Meanwhile, I now have a corrected pdf file of the book and should any of my CR
amigos who bought that book want it, I'll gladly send it along. Its the least I can do to apologize.

During the course of the last few days, I, Rob Davis and Michael Poll of Cornerstone Book Publishers have made a new commitment to
eradicating these typos and snafus from all our future releases. To that end we've recruited a new staff member in John Bruening, who
will be our official proof-reader from now on. John is a writer/editor with an extensive background and very eager to take on assignment.
A fellow book-lover, he hates typos and assures us he's a relentless typo-destroyer. Which bodes well for the all of us. Allowing us to make a positive from a negative.
Meanwhile, another such proof-reader is now going through Cavemen of New York page for page. We hope by the start of next week
to have brand new "clean" files at both our Lulu store on-line and the Cornerstone printers.

I'm glad to hear about the new "relentless typo-destroyer." I proofread all my work carefully, but I always worry that something might have slipped past me.

Proofreading my own work is always a challenge. It's as if my mind translates what I read directly into what I initially intended. I find I am better at proofreading material I am unfamiliar with. I have a ton of respect for great proofreaders.

Whoops! Forgot to mention I really enjoyed reading Cavemen of NY back in Nov. Loved how you didn't fool around and got straight to the cavemen! Thanks for a great pulp story!

Well thanks, Steve. Sincerely. Part of the allure of the original pulps were that they were action heavy. Hit the ground running, and then never stop till you reach the ending. Which is the challenge I and my colleagues take on every time we do a new story. It's a fun topic and one I've thought about a great deal during the past few years. Today's writers are clearly better writers, understanding the process and elements of what writing is. The trick then becomes to marry this sensitivity with old fashion purple prose to create what I love to call "neo" pulp. I truly love writing Captain Hazzard adventures and with readers like you out there, have no plans to ever stop.
