Colored this little beauty for the back cover of the Sniper and Rook trade paperback coming out from Beta 3 Comics. I was originally just supposed to color Sniper and Rook and a bit of the background, but since Battle of the Planets was my favorite cartoon as a kid, I couldn't pass up doing the whole thing. smile.gif Of course, I probably should have colored the background and stuff on a different layer, but I wasn't thinking that day so I colored the image as is, and then went back and removed all of the Gatchaman characters and drew in the missing background afterwards. *sigh*

C&C's always welcome!

I did some more work on this one with all of the feedback I received in mind. I think this image works much better.

Well, it looks like Disney put the kibosh on this project. This was to have been part of a Pirates of the Caribbean anthology to be released along with the latest film. As far as I know, we had it completed in time, so I'm not sure why it didn't come out. From what I could find on the internet about the book, Disney scrapped the project, and may have released a couple of the stories in different books. Oh well.

This was from the Young Jack Sparrow story.

Cory Hamscher posted this little gem and I wasted no time in asking him for a hi-res copy so I could color it. I loved the lines and the fierceness of it. Cory is a bad-ass!

C&C's are always encouraged.

I've been looking to expand my artistic wings a bit and learn some new skills, so while my penciling isn't where I would like it to be yet, I thought I'd try my hand and inking. This is my first attempt. The speed lines were kicking my a$$ since I don't have a T-square yet and my straight edge apparently wasn't exactly straight. LOL

This was done digitally in Photoshop with nothing but the standard hard round brush. Anyone having any tips on a better brush set for inking though, please let me know as I'd like to experiment a lot more with this.

Pencils done by Eddy Barrows

The hi-res inks can be found at my Deviant Art page: http://thebdc.deviantart.com/art/Superboy-Inks-252954565?

Comments and critiques are greatly appreciated.

And here is a side by side for comparison.

Ross Hughes
I've been totally slacking about updating my various art threads around the interwebs. My day job has moved from putting items into space to putting items in the dumpster and I don't have as much free time at work as I used to. LOL The good news is that as soon as I can in 2012, I'll be putting myself up for the layoffs at work and making coloring my full-time job. When that happens I'll be begging everyone I know for coloring work, so don't be surprised when I show up on your doorstep. wink.gif

I don't want to dump a whole lot at once so I'll try to show some of the newer stuff I've done and work backwards a bit here and there.

You may have heard that DC is doing some new-fangled promotional idea, and I was proud to be a (small) part of it. Justice League International is on sale now, so please go out and immediately flip to these pages and wonder aloud how whoever colored these particular pages hasn't been asked to color a full book yet. smile.gif

Colored this for Cory Hamscher. He wanted to try the new Superman on for size and I thought it would be a great opportunity to take a crack at him myself.

Thoughts? C&C's are always appreciated.

Oh man! I can't tell you how freaking excited I am to be able to show this now! Any comic fan that grew up in the 80's was probably a HUGE fan of the New Teen Titans. Let's face it, Marv Wolfman and George Perez dominated DC comics with New Teen Titans in much the same way that Chris Claremont and John Byrne dominated Marvel with the X-Men. The Judas Contract is still a must read for anyone interested in comics in my opinion.

So when Hi-Fi sent me pages to color for New Teen Titans: Games, by none other than Wolfman and Perez, I literally had to take a few minutes to get over my excitement before I opened the files. Talk about being nervous. George Perez has always been one of my idols in comics and the Titans were IT for me, so to have the opportunity to work on these pages was like stepping back into my childhood and fulfilling a life-goal all in one shot.

Ironically, much like the first issue of Justice League International (which was the only re-launch book I was a part of), I haven't been able to get my hands on a copy of this book yet. I'm anxiously waiting on a phone call from my LCS for both. smile.gif Since I don't have a copy yet, I'm not entirely sure what color the giant robot fighting Cyborg turned out to be. I initially went with a green color, but was told later on that they wanted it to be white. The last I heard they were still debating it since it was kind of difficult to tell where the robot ended and Cyborg began since they were essentially supposed to be the same color.

Ross Hughes
Colored this for my man, Cory Hamscher!

Cory and I are getting a good groove going. I'm really looking forward to doing more work with him.

C&C's are encouraged and appreciated!

So it was just announced that Rob Liefeld is resurrecting Extreme Studios and among the titles being offered up will be Supreme! Erik Larsen will be doing the breakdowns with my buddy Cory Hamscher being the regular penciller/inker on the series. Fans of the Allen Moore written Supreme era will be in for a treat as the first story will be an unused Moore script. This particular piece is a pin-up that will be used in the book and will also be available as a print at Mid-Ohio. Swing by Cory's table and be sure to pick one up! Tell him Ross sent you. smile.gif

Ross, your level of PRETTY gets higher every. Single. Page.

You rock, good sir.
Ross Hughes
Thank you, Fred!

Colored this for Michael Babinski. Truth be told, I had my eye on this one since the day Mikey posted it on his Deviant Art page, so I was doubly excited that he wanted to commission me to color it for him. I've been wanting to break away from the cut and brush style that I've been relying on lately and do something a little more freehand. I don't think I've done one like this since I worked on Fallen Justice years ago. I was really pleased with the way this one turned out.

C&C's are heartily encouraged. smile.gif

I loved MOTU as a kid, so it was pretty easy for me to want to color this bad-ass version of Trapjaw. I don't know what Mattel was thinking with his color scheme though. LOL

Next month will mark the relaunch of Supreme from Image Comics. Art will feature breakdowns by Erik Larsen and finishes and inks by Cory Hamscher. Cory and I have been getting together on some projects recently and he asked me to color his version of the variant covers they'll be doing. The first few issues will feature covers by Erik, Rob Liefeld, and Cory before they settle in and just do one cover. Cory and I are treating it like a competition and we REALLY want to win. wink.gif

Be sure to pick up our cover when you do your shopping. Remember, a vote for Cory is a vote for America!!! And puppies!

C&C's are always welcome and appreciated.

From Supreme #63

And from Supreme #64

Ross Hughes
Was asked to make some changes to the cover for #64.

Ross Hughes
FINAL revision. I hope. Cory and I went back and forth on the skin tones for a couple days. So what we have here is a healthier looking Supreme. Also made a couple other minor tweaks. But we're calling this puppy done.

As a stand-alone piece, the green background can't be beat, but the gold Supreme title is just going to jump off the blue background in print, so I can dig this one too.

Ross Hughes
I saw this page previewed on Jon Malin's twitter feed, so it should be okay to show the colors. I'll be coloring Image Comics revival of Youngblood. Issue #71 hits the stands this May!!! #71 will feature art by Jon and myself, as well as pages done by Rob Liefeld and Matt Yackey, before Jon and I take over exclusively in issue #72. Jon's art is so sleek and bad-a$$ and this book is going to be just what Youngblood fans want to see.

Now, I don't want to influence your decision, but who wouldn't want to own this little batch of awesome?

Ross Hughes
Another collaboration between myself and Cory Hamscher. Glad I was finally able to color something I'm allowed to post. I'm going through withdrawals. smile.gif

Looks like this will be the last cover that Cory and I will do for the Supreme series for a little while, so we really wanted to make it special. The second I saw the rough sketch, I knew this thing was going to be awesome.

I tried a slightly different technique with this one and it really brought out some vibrant color so I'm definitely going to be playing around with it a bit more to see how it works on other things.

This started out as sketch by Khoi Pham that I had asked to color and then turned out to be sort of a color contest over at Ten Ton's forums. As soon as I asked about it, I got slammed with work and never got around to coloring it. LOL Khoi and I were at the same convention this weekend so I made it a point to get it colored and presented him with a nice printed copy of it. He loved it and now we're going to make prints of it for sale and do some other prints together in the near future. That worked out nicely. smile.gif

I can see why people would be willing to pay you for your colouring work, it looks good! I have a question though, what are your thoughts on cel colouring/shading? I'm curious

Have I really not posted anything in 6 months? Wow, am I slacking. I won't dump everything but here is some of the more recent colors I've done. I'll try to be around a little more often. smile.gif
