Ross Hughes
Hey guys and gals!

My name is Ross Hughes and I am a freelance Digital Colorist. I ran across this board a little while ago so I thought I'd sign up an introduce myself.

Some things to know about me:

- I've been a digital colorist part time for the last 4(ish) years. I was cruising another board and got inspired to give it a try by a guy who was coloring the cover to Avengers/JLA #3. Next thing you know, it stuck and people actually want to pay ME to color. Ha. What a racket!

I've been working the last couple of years on a title called Fallen Justice for Red Handed Studios. It's been a blast. We've got 5 issues of the 7 issue mini-series in the can, and I'm currently working on issue #6. I've been so grateful to work on this (and learn on) this book and with the other people involved in creating it.

- I'm an unabashed smart-a$$.

- I've got pretty thick skin (especially around the midsection) so feel free to offer up your opinions on my work. I noticed there is a section here specifically for crits, but feel free to drop the hammer here if you feel it's warranted.

Here are some promo pieces that I finished up recently for the book. I'll post some more of them when I get them finished up. I'm already noticing a problem with the glow around Prometheus' arm. I'm thinking that happened when I converted to CMYK. I'll fix that and repost, but in the mean time, I'd love to hear what you have to say about anything else.

I'll swoop back in here and post some of my other work, or you can check out my DA page to see some more of my work. I'm available for commissions as well. Just shoot me an e-mail or a PM and we can discuss the details.

Hope to talk to you all soon.

I would have to agree with Bill, your work is outstanding. I noticed most of it from your deviant art account.
As for having pretty thick skin for criticism, I think I have you beat. ^_- My style is so far off from current traditional comic coloring that people have often told me my work is too amaturish. Somehow I doubt you'll ever have that problem.

When you get the chance have Tony or Bill email you a copy of Dan Fraga's recent piece, the contest ended but I'd love to see what you can come up with.

Anyway, welcome aboard and take care.
The Leader
Really outstanding work. Welcome to the board and I can 't wait to see more posts from you.
Anthony Lee_merged
Wow... fantastic stuff! Welcome to the boards!
Bluepencil
 Outstanding works!! Welcome to board!! Post some more please!!!
Ross Hughes
Thanks, guys! Give me a little while and I'll put some more stuff up.
Tim Tilley
Ross you should join us in the colorist section when you have a chance, at the moment we are discussing color theory.
We could always use another opinion, and once more nice work!
Ross Hughes
I'll be right there! Just have to go to a couple morning meetings first. :?

Okay, I FINALLY got everything situated with my new computer and was able to update these a little bit.

I dropped the sat level on the tail end of the jacket in the first pic and brought out some more light in his arms and shoulders to help break that up a little bit. Also added a whiter highlight to the underside rimlight to help him pop out even more.

I added some rimlight to Justice Theta.

I fixed the glow in the Prometheus pic, and played with my color holds on the background rocks so that it didn't look so plain.

I'm moving on to some new ones this evening, so hopefully I'll have a couple more to be able to post tomorrow.
Ross Hughes
...or the day after tomorrow.......

Here is another promo piece. This one is Dynagirl. Justice Theta's woman and future star of her own ongoing series.

Here is some more promo work for Fallen Justice. This is Ms. Anarchy.

And these are some promo pieces for a book called Totem.

Ross Hughes
Ha! Harold and I got our wires crossed on a couple of the characters. Too late for the pencils and inks, but never too late for color! Oops!

Bluepencil
Awesome coloring as always!!
Ross Hughes
Alright, last of the FJ promos before I dive into issue #6.

Ross Hughes
Took a little break from Fallen Justice to color this one up. Harold and I are really starting to find our strides together, I think.

The Leader
Wow. Your stuff if more and more impressive the more I see of it!
Bluepencil
Other amazing piece!
Ross Hughes
I still have a lot of work to do, but thanks!!!
Ross Hughes
This is the cover to issue #1 of The Wannabez from Brant Fowler and Scott Simmons. This promises to be a really fun read.

It seems Photobucket has deleted your other stuff. I keep seeing Photobucket: bandwidth exceeded.

How irritating.

Really like the last piece.
Ross Hughes
Tell me about it. I went through and deleted a bunch of older stuff that was in my account, so hopefully it won't be an issue next month, but if it is, I'll be in the market for another (hopefully free) photo-hosting option. In the mean-time, all of these images can be found in my DA Gallery: http://thebdc.deviantart.com/gallery/

Sorry for the inconvenience.
Ross Hughes
I'm getting ramped up on issue #6 of Fallen Justice, so I thought I'd toss a page up to see what people think. I'll post some more as I get further into it.

C&C's always appreciated.

Bluepencil
Amazing as always and don't have any crit from me this time.
lakcoo
I can't really give any critiques since I don't know much about coloring. Don't know how to do basic coloring in photoshop yet sleep.gif But your stuff looks great!!!
Ross Hughes
Thanks guys!

Here is another page from the 6th issue. At this point the main character has totally lost it and is just taking guys out left and right.

This page was both a lot of fun to do and a pain in the ass. =)

The colors on that Spidey piece rock! I'm also liking the Dervish t-shirt image as well. Great stuff.
Ross Hughes
This is the cover to the 7th and final issue if Fallen Justice. This has been a blast to work on, and I've grown and learned so much since we first started this thing. I've still got a long way to go, but I'm really proud of this book. I can't wait to put the cap on it. :D

And this is a little promo bonus that I finished up over the weekend.

The Leader
beautiful colors- is this book coming out in print?
Ross Hughes
Thank you very much!

Yes, it's available through Red Handed Studios
The Leader
I was just wondering do the cover art prints come with the package subscription? You ought to tell them to detail the extras on the 1-7 subscription package paying 35 bucks for 7 books that individually cost a combined 25 doesn't seem like that good a deal in and of itself. :)
Ross Hughes
Ha ha. I guess that depends on your perspective.

I'll e-mail Cary and find out for sure, but I thought I remembered him saying that you did get some extras along with the subscription. I'll post his response and pass along the need for clarification if that price is accurate.

Thanks for catching that.
Anthony Hochrein
Congratulations! Your work rocks!!
Ross Hughes
Did some colors real quick over this Liefeld sketch last night.

I've been taking some time off with the passing of my grandfather, but it's time to get back to work. Before I put the nose back to the grindstone, I wanted to do a fun little warm-up, so here it is. This is a character that Harold drew for his first work pencilling. He did this for a friend of his and asked if I'd put some colors on it. I thought it would be perfect to get me back into the swing of things.

Crits always appreciated.

Lines by Harold Edge

Anthony Hochrein
Beautifully done, Ross!! And I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your grandfather. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Ross Hughes
Thanks, man.
The Leader
Nice warm up. Looks great.

Sorry to hear about your loss.
Ross Hughes
Thank you.

I've still got a couple tweaks that I'm going to be making to the background. I'll re-post when I get it sorted out tonight.
Ross Hughes
Made some adjustments based off of some crits I received.

Ross Hughes
Here is one I finished up last night for the HueDoo coloring contest.

The character is called Kid Midas.

Lines by Jun Bob Kim

The Leader
Excellent coloring and composition. I love the shiny metal against the darkening backdrop.
Ross Hughes
Tweaked it a little bit.

Anthony Hochrein
The hotspots make a difference.
Ross Hughes
Man, I somehow locked myself out/couldn't remember my password, but I've got it all sorted out now. Sheesh. Here's a little of what I've been up to over the last couple of months.

Some pages I'm working on for Marat Mychaels. I believe the book is called Demonika.

And a Sniper and Rook #10 variant cover.

I'll be around more often now that I can finally get back on the boards.
Bluepencil
I'm totally speechless and these are awesome!
The Leader
really awesome stuff Ross.

I'm still struggling through the coloring process and I wish I had a tenth of your talent.
Ross Hughes
Thanks, guys.

Jake,

I'm currently in the process of collecting ideas for a coloring column. If there is something specific you're struggling with and want to know more about, head over here and let me know and I'll see what I can help with.
Tim Tilley
Have you heard back from the CB The comic people yet?
I submitted a a sample to them as well and never heard back from
them. It's the one with the alien and soldiers by the way.
