My 3 year old son asked me if the emperor in Star Wars was a Jedi, and I had to kind of fudge my answer . . . any thoughts?

Palpatine was a Sith apprentice who killed his master. Then Palpatine for some reason decided to change government from the inside, manipulating his way to power, and eventually declaring himself Emperor when all of his enemies and the Jedi were defeated.

He was a Sith Lord. It sounds odd, but I think the 3-year-old answer is just that good guys are Jedi, Bad guys are Sith.

I agree with the 3 year old answer, HOWEVER... The Jedi are an order, just like the Knights of Columbus, or the Freemasons, lol. I don't know if we have enough information about Palpatine's background story to know if he was ever a Jedi (i.e. if he ever joined the order). Since no one seems to suspect that he had force ability, I would guess that he did not join the order because surely someone would have remembered him, if this is true, then he is not a Jedi because he never joined the Jedi order.

Bah!!! it's Star Wars. You get more drama from the wrapper of a pice of Bazooka Joe's gum!!

Palpatine was never part of the Jedi order, having been trained as a Sith from the start. You basically have three types of force users. First, Jedi, who are inducted trained and tested into the knighthood. Second, Sith, who follow a similar progression as Jedi, but through the dark side of the FORCE, and Dark Force user or Fallen Jedi, meaning someone who went through Jedi training but succumbed to the Dark Side. These third types are frowned on by both sides. The Jedi see them as failures and little better than Sith, while the Sith view them as Jedi to be used and abused before killing them.

So to answer the question, Palpainte was never a Jedi, he was pure Sith. His master was Darth Plaugious.
