Booster Gold #7

Coming off of last month’s “zero issue,” in which series artist Dan Jurgens had a chance to revisit his glory days as DC’s premier “event” creator, “The Blue & The Gold” takes off in earnest here, with the stage being set and the villains being identified.

Some really great moments pepper the script—the interplay between Booster Gold and his best friend/teammate Blue Beetle (Ted Kord, the one who was dead until BG #6) is honest and fun—but what really sticks out is the sense of direction that the book has.  The reveal of The New Freedom Fighters, essentially the premiere superteam of the twisted timeline Booster has unintentionally created by saving Ted’s life, is a highlight of the issue both plotwise and artistically—until you get a really great splash page, it’s easy to forget how impressive and epic Jurgens’ style can be, as it gets lost in creating a lifelike simplicity for the many characters that inhabit the pages of the series.  Blue Beetle’s old 1980s-era logo is used on the cover of the book, and Jurgens integrates the art style of Ted’s old series with his own skillfully, depicting Beetle less flabby and rubbery (as he was often depicted by Kevin Maguire and his successors in the Justice League International and Justice League America books) and more angular and wiry.

Finally taking up one of the long-dangling arcs of Brad Meltzer’s first Justice League of America arc, Supernova and the so-called Black Beetle (who had previously masterminded the setting of the story by identifying himself to Booster as the Blue Beetle of the 28th Century) find their way back into the company of a group of time-traveling villains who have their own, twisted take on Rip Hunter’s chalkboard.

This book has consistently been one of the best superhero books in print since it debuted 8 months ago, and the story that kicks into gear with this issue is THE story that the hardcore fans of the book have been waiting for since the end of 52.
