Director Francis Lawrence said today at the I Am Legend junket that he would love to helm a Constantine sequel. He said that the sequel will depend on them finding the right story. In a one-on-one interview with ShockTillYouDrop.com, Lawrence added a follow-up could be a sequel or a prequel. "I like origin stories, that would be cool. What worked for me is the film came from the 'Dangerous Habits' storyline - he had cancer and he was dying. To me that was the core of the story. It's why the movie works for me, because the story couldn't be more personal. People have thrown concepts around [for a sequel] and I go 'Why does he give a f**k?' In the first film he's trying to save his own skin. Everything else, you can come up with these stories where he goes to different lands and fight the bad guys or witch doctors, but I think it all falls flat. Until someone comes up with a great idea, whether it's earlier [in his life] or later, we'll just have to see." - SuperHeroHype, 11/30/07 [link]
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (The Transformers) tells IGN Movies that he'd love to get a sequel to the Keanu Reeves-starring Constantine up - but unfortunately he's not the only one who gets to make that decision. "I wish I knew the answer to that," he says. "That would really be a Warner Bros. executive question. I know all the filmmakers want to try to make number two. We love the character. We're hoping that we can find a way to make even, I'll say, a darker, harder version of it. We're not at that place yet where we really have the ability to get that done, but I know Keanu wants to play that and all of us think that there is a natural, new and darker adventure with Constantine." - 6/15/07, Counting Down [link]
"Shia LaBeouf, who co-starred in the comic-inspired film Constantine, told SCI FI Wire he was surprised over reports that Warner Brothers is in talks with stars Keanu Reeves and Rachel Weisz for a follow-up, Constantine 2. Responding to reports that The Hollywood Reporter talked to Reeves, LaBeouf said, "Wow, I didn't think he would jump back on. Keanu went through a lot of s--t with that movie." 03/13/07, SciFi.com [link]
“Yes, we are developing a very dark version. It will be lower budgeted and Keanu [Reeves] totally wants to do it and Francis [Lawrence] wants to do it and the studio wants to do it. But, it will be half the money. We are literally, we are going to go really dark, that’s our intent." Constantine Lorenzo di Bonaventura producer - 03/7/07, IESB [link]
IESB: Are we ever going to see a sequel to Constantine? LSD: Yes, with Keanu [Reeves]. We have been working with a team of writers for a story and yes, we will. We are really going to go for it, it will be a hard 'R’ and Keanu will be in it. The area that we found is great-it will be outside of America. It will be a different director but Francis [Lawrence] will produce it, we will maintain his vision. - Firstshowing.net [link]
