CARNAGE U.S.A. #1 (of 5)

David Pinckney on the issue!

Last year Zeb Wells and Clayton Crain created a limited series called Carnage that brought Cletus Kasady and his symbiote back to the forefront. After being very successful, the same team is at it again with the sequel, Carnage U.S.A.

At this point we don't exactly know what Cletus wants outside of his generic response of "everything" when he's asked, but it honestly doesn't feel like it matters at the moment. What matters is the clear and present danger that his presence brings.

Everything you know and love about Carnage is here. He's rash, he's violent, and he's eerily calm about his lunatic ways. This unexpected town that Cletus has found himself in, is in for a bit of trouble. Wells brings the reader in with scenes of intensity and urgency that almost always leave you wanting more and wondering what happens next. We don't really know the scale of the problem at first, but the gravity of the situation is really brought home when the Avengers are called in.

As many of us know, Carnage is Spider-Man's villain and, Spider-Man is an Avenger, so it's no surprise that, like its predecessor, the web-head himself is a focal point of this mini-series. Wells knows just how to make Spider-Man shine alongside other powerhouse, a-listers like Captain America and Wolverine. If you are a Spidey fan you'll fit right in here. Even if you haven't read the previous mini-series, Carnage U.S.A. is very welcoming and doesn't rely too much on its prequel (at least as of issue 1).

The first thing you'll notice when you crack open this book is the stellar art. The style is really interesting. It seems to be grounded in realism but with a nice stylized, comic art twist. Accompanied by colors that are seemingly perfect for this style, Clayton has given us a comic that doesn't just look good, but something that keeps us wanting more. The art is clean and consistent and helps keep the reader invested in the story.

Overall this book is great. Clean, easy to follow story, filled with witty banter, humor and scenes of intensity and drama coupled with fantastic art, makes this comic one to not be missed. It's really hard to find something to not like in this comic. If you are looking for a good mini-series look no further then Carnage U.S.A.
