X-Men Origins: Wolverine
The Game
You jump out of a moving helicopter and crash land into enemy territory where mercenaries are very much out to kill you. The only way to survive? Popping your claws! That's right fair readers in this edition of Why I Love Comics we are talking about none other than X-men Origins: Wolverine, the game.
From the very beginning where you pick your level of difficulty from the menu, they throw you right into things and your regeneration is quickly put to the test. You have a health br that goes down when damage occurs but when you kill your enemies and find some cover, you can easily regenerate all that you've lost.
The game is fun to jump into as it honestly finally feels like the Wolverine game fans have been clamoring to have for years. The game was made by Raven Studios who for those who don't know have worked on stuff such as Marvel Ultimate Alliance and the first 4 Tony Hawk games.
The game itself is rated mature and feels like God of War with wolverine thrown in. It follows the movie's storyline but dds its own flair to things with chapters on the Sentinel program and even touches on exactly what happened during that mission that made Logan quit. We have cameo's from certain big names like Raven Darkholme and even the Wendigo.
Oh, for those obsessive compulsive gamers out there, we have some collectibles to find which allow you to unlock a few of Wolverines well known costumes like the current X-Force one and even the classic look. The achievements on the X-Box 360 also include some funny little easter eggs referencing Portal, WoW and him being the best at what he does.
My personal favorite thing to do in the game so far has been the quick kills. Here you have to grab your enemy, wait for your claws to gleam and then press Y to do a devastating attack. There are a few different combo's, like when you swirl your claws to attack multiple enemies at the same time, and you gain better and stronger attacks on the enemies over time.
The voice cast actually features both of our well known Wolverines from both the animated and live action world. That's right, Steve Blum (Cowboy Bebop "Spike Spegal" and the last few years of animation-Wolverine-wise) is very much in the game usually heard voicing random soldiers or Wade Wilson towards the end of the game. Most of the cast of the movie from Will I Am, Hugh Jackman and Liev Shreiber have all been coerced into reprising their roles for the game and you feel right at home hearing their voices come out of these characters. There's even a fun little bit of joking around about who could possibly be Nightcrawler's father in the movies.
It's a decent length with at least 8 to 10 hours of gameplay and you get to unleash the full extent of Wolverine's powers along the way. From facing a Wendigo to going head to head with a helicopter, the game truly is a unique experience with plenty of replayabiliy. I recommend it to any fans who want to know what it feels like to be Logan.
