Why I Love PROTOTYPE!

Welcome to the second video game edition of the Why I Love column devoted to Activision and Radical Entertainment's Prototype. In this game there is a virus released into New York that you kind of accidently helped set off as lead character Alex Mercer who remembers absolutely nothing about his past. Soon your involved in a massive conspiracy, gaining darkness like powers and running on buildings like you were Spider-Man.

There is a lot to like about this game: you can run around and basically do anything you want on the island, but if you're not careful you'll set off the military to come after you. Depending on how powerful you are, you may want to be careful. You can also find people to consume in a fun storytelling device setup called the "web of intrigue," which is actually pretty creative and adds a lot to the story as you continue to play through.

It feels like you're playing a Spider-Man game where they've given you darkness powers, which definitely adds to the playability of the game. The cutscenes aren't overwhelming and you as the character are actually playing a majority of the game.

Some of the people you absorb via the web of intrigue have special powers where it grants you the ability to pilot a helicopter or a tank, which add new gameplay overall. I like that they built in the absorbing factor as you can get help when you need it by just stealing someone's life-force. It also helps with stealth as you're able to take on this person's identity and hide from whoever is chasing you.

I've played through about 70% of the game at the moment, but from what I've played so far you definitely get value for the price the game is set at. I can't wait to see what the rest of the story has ready for me and definitely recommend this game to any comic gamer who likes GTA4 and the Spider-Man games.
