Kurt Busiek is widely regarded as one of the great writers in modern comics, and for most fans that reputation started with Marvels. Working in concert with painter Alex Ross, Busiek reimagined important, historic stories throughout Marvel Comics' publishing history through the eyes of freelance news photographer Phil Sheldon. This week, Busiek returned to Sheldon's world with Marvels: Eye of the Camera #1.
While Jay Anacaleto doesn't quite live up to Ross here (it would be hard to imagine finding someone to work for what comics publishers pay, who did), his art is capable, well-rendered and ultimately the book looks great. It's a bit like Fernando Parasin trying to take on the Kingdom Come characters--nobody's quite Alex Ross, but other artists can still do a good book.
Coming in just a little while is a (Somewhere in the Neighborhood of) Ten Questions With Kurt Busiek interview, that will give some more insight into this issue, as well as that surprising final page.
