A Column Debut!

A webcomic is defined as a comic published on a website, often exclusively, providing easy access to an audience, though some are published in books and newspapers but maintain a web archive. Anybody with an internet connection and some kind of graphics program can make a webcomic. Most people think of webcomics as strips, especially those with video games or otherwise geek culture themes. After all, webcomics mean nerd comics, right?

If you think this is true, punch yourself in the face. Hard.

Webcomics are as diverse as humanity as itself because quite literally anyone anywhere can put out a webcomic. There are awesome comics across a myriad of genres including fantasy, surrealism, action, comedy, slice-of-life, drama, and even adult. (Yes, you just read that. There are good adult webcomics out there.) However, the average comic book reader and even webcomic reader does not know that. In fact, there are a lot of things the average Joe does not know about webcomics.

What are some good webcomics out there? What are the bad webcomics out there (that deserve the wrath of this column)? What are the overrated comics out there? What are the hidden gems? What if I want to make a webcomic of my own? How do I go about doing that? What technologies are best for publication on the web or creation of art? There are many, many questions the layperson has about webcomics and I am here to offer some answers.

I am Jules Rivera and I am the writer/artist/letter/creator/whatever behind Marsh Rocket. I've been working on webcomics for roughly six years and I've been a fan for longer than that. I'm here to guide you, the unindoctrinated, through the webcomics world. I plan to shine a spotlight on the best indy works out there. I plan to knock the overrated down a few pegs. I plan to show you the ins and outs of creating your own webcomics and explore the technologies and tools behind web publication.

And, unlike some folks, I work for free.

...Okay, I work for web hits. There's no such thing as altruism, people.

Marsh, a corporate hitman, must retrieve a mysterious briefcase for a sleazy loan shark at the risk of betraying his own people. With warring factions after Marsh, the briefcase, and each other, the blood, knives, and even breakfast foods are bound to fly.
