A Word From One of the Creators
From the desk of Eric Ratcliffe
Well here it is. I can only claim credit for one line of this strip and that's the "I think I'm going to be sick." the rest of it is all Lisa. As promised my rant follows...
You know what I hate about the Twilight series? Everything. I'm dead serious too, this is the first time in my life where I can look to something and if someone asks me "Hey Eric, did you read New Moon?" I would respond by asking "What is wrong with you?"
My first real problem comes from the whole under-age girl falling in love with an immortal vampire who, last I checked, is probably around at least a 100 right? So Edward, are you suddenly Mathew McConaughey? (Yes I just referenced that movie. It's funny)
What self respecting immortal nut job is going to go....so I'm bored and I want to relive the worst time of my teenage life, I'm going back to high school! Because there is no chance in hell a guy that sparkles in the sunlight (how exactly did no one in the high school notice that?!) is not going to get beat up or shoved into a locker!
Speaking of that.....what?! You sparkle in the sunlight! Are you a My Little Pony or a Care Bear? And you're supposed to be intimidating? Just what the heck? It's like Stephanie Meyer sat down one day and decided that she was going to spit in the face of anyone that ever wrote vampires before her...create a brand new type of "vampire" who last I checked are only even remotely close to a vampire because they drink blood. Not just any blood, friends....animal blood.
In fact, just hold on right there...how did any of you "vampires" get sired in the first place if you all eat little bunny rabbits?! Oh! The first vampire was a bunny rabbit....that's it! It had big sharp pointy teeth. (It was right there, I had to go for it)
The other thing that I really don't respect about Stephanie Meyer as a writer or really as a "creative individual" for this matter is her "style. Open the first book, the font is huge - there's like 3 paragraphs at the most on each page....double spaced! That's just lazy and obviously it's really maybe a third of the damn page count that it really should be. And those books look thick...even though they shouldn't be. It gives people this false sense of accomplishment when they are done reading it like "hey guys, look at this huge book I finished!"
And the trailer for New Moon...dear God. From my understanding those "werewolves" (I'm using that term very, very loosely) are shapeshifters....umm what? So once again...how did you become a werewolf in the first place?! Obviously your not one of the many forms of werewolves that's been pre-established. (I believe there are at least 3)
And Edward and Bella...that's her name right? The chick that would "die" without him? Seriously? The emo child of the year award goes to Bella! Surprised there's not a scene of her with a razor blade or anything. It gives unhealthy relationships a whole new meaning. I mean Edward's not even the bad boy type from everything I've seen, he's trying too hard to do his impression of the Incredible Hulk except you can replace angry with horny and you have your difference right there.
In fact, someone get me a copy of the first movie, have me, and like 2 or 3 other people from the site and I guarantee you'll get more of this but much funnier in a Mystery Science Theater way.
Remember when we had Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural and John Carpenter vampire stuff to cleanse the pallet? James Woods, Sarah Michelle Gellar and even Ryan Reynolds as Vampire Slayers. Hell, Triple H the professional wrestler made a better vampire then these guys.
Do you want honest to God recommendations for good Vampire reading? People that manage to get everything right? Alright folks you've got it:
Loaded Bible Vol 1 by Tim Seeley, out now by Image.
The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher (There are about 11 books in the series now and you get different kind of vampires. There are 4 courts in total)
Paul Cornell's amazing last arc of Captain Britain and the MI 13, which I believe is being collected by Marvel very soon if not already.
And a few movies for you as well:
John Carpenter's Vampires (Featuring James Woods)
Interview With a Vampire
From Dusk Til Dawn (because well let's face it, anything with robert Rodriguez's name is awesome)
Well that's it for this week, folks, hope someone laughed at my bad jokes up there. Let the hate mail commence, I'm ready for it. :) Join us in 7 as Bill and I go back to some very familiar ground in our arguments. See you then!
