Book Summery: Deadpool-Man, Deadpool-Man - does whatever a Deadpool can...spins a web any size - but not really...Deadpool's don't have webs. Look out! Here comes the Deadpool-Man! What force on Earth has brought the Merc with a Mouth and the Webheaded Wonder closer together than Quesada and Twitter? And how does it tie to the upcoming Spider story The Gauntlet?! And finally - WHO IS LADY STILT-MAN?! Joe Kelly (DEADPOOL CLASSIC; This issue of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) and Eric Canete (IRON MAN: ENTER THE MANDARIN) bring you 2079's top Marvel Comic of the last 70 years (sorry, Dazzler #500)!
"This Man This Expletive Deleted"
First off, the cover. It's humorous in a way. Deadpool kitting out Spider-Man 1990's style. On second thoughts I'm getting a sinking feeling. Is anyone else sick of Deadpool this past year. I collected the original ongoing when he was new and god forbid, ';fresh'. But with four series going right now and guest appearances everywhere, can anyone put ';dead horse' and ';flogging' in one sentence.
Marvel is gearing up to unleash the ';Gauntlet' as the next Spidey arc so what we get here is a classic filler issue. Joe Kelly was the original writer of the Deadpool ongoing so he knows the character quite well. The book starts off in a club with Wade talking supposedly with Barack Obama in an effort to get girls. Typically with Wade he talking out of his behind and it inevitably it ends in disaster and a fight. We then see Spidey throwing down with the Lady Stilt Man, the newest in the recent stable of female versions of Marvel's male characters. A timely intervention by Wade helps Spidey in, honestly, a comical fashion. A long back and forth between the two culminates with a revelation that Wade is only distracting Spidey from something else. The final scene of the issue sets up an arc to follow with appearance from Madame Web, Arana, Anti Venom and Spider-Woman (Mattie Franklin).
I could not help but feel what a waste of time this issue was. It served little purpose other than to make a 22 page story of the one final scene. In previous reviews of this title, I have mentioned when these situations arose that it a poor construct of the book. They are stories that will probably never appear in trade and as such they serve no good then to give creators licence to go nuts for an issue without having to stick to an arc or other plans. The huge difference with these one issue stories to the ones written by say, Stan Lee for example, is that the older ones were so much better. They still had the heart of the overall picture and were not just splurges of indulgence.
I did not care for this art at all. The only reason I did not pick up the Enter the Mardarin series was the art. I compare this issue in bits to Bachalo, who I am also not a fan of. It's nothing other than personal preference.
I have to mention the recap page at the start, which was just nothing other than just messing on the part of the production team. Since BND, Spidey has come into a lot of stick in regards to its direction and how different it is in many aspects to what came before and every so often something like this just adds fuel to the fire. Just stick to what works.
Marvel seem to always bring a stand alone issue like this right before a major story line. And next issue is the start of the Guantlet and with that brings a sense of relief that normal service will be resumed and not too soon. This issue was laborious.
