Invincible Iron Man #22
Stark: Disassembled 3 of 5
Chuck Moore on the issue!
When Invincible Iron Man won the Eisner for Best New Series earlier this year I openly complained that it wasn't as deserving as Terry Moore's Echo which was also up for the prize. I'm here to say, I made a mistake in those initial claims. I just love when the world of comics makes me eat my words as it almost always means I've discovered something amazing that I wasn't expecting. Such was the case with Marvel's Invincible Iron Man series. Having avoided most Iron Man stories over the years like the plague (just wasn't ever my thing) and finding the recent War Machine series to be a complete disappointment, I was leery to try Invincible. Really, it was only after the Eisner hit it home that I might be missing something solid that I jumped on board. My friends, I have never looked back since. Simply put, Invincible Iron Man is must-read-Marvel of the first order.
Matt Fraction's narrative style is nothing short of amazing here. There is heart, there is emotion and there is one heck of an evolving, interesting story. What about that story? If you haven't been reading, Stark has all but burnt himself out body and soul as we approached the current Stark: Disassembled tale. Now, unconscious and barely clinging to life, he has left instructions for his friends telling them how to, quite literally, reboot him as he has rendered himself in almost computer-like terms merging the soul with the spirit of the machine. Really interesting stuff.
Now, his friends are working hard to reassemble him and in this issue, the handiwork of Donald Blake (yep, Thor's alter ego) has proven just short of the challenge. Seeking help of a more spiritual nature, they put out the call for a doctor and Strange steps up to bat just as the forces of maniacal evil are afoot to take out to comatose Stark and recovering Pepper Potts. Captain America guest stars and this is another outstanding issue for a series that has proven itself to be Invincibly Eisner Worthy!
