Book Summery : In the south of France, leave the motorway and keep going over the fields. You'll end up seeing the Paillar bell-tower. In this village where rugby is king, even the roundabouts are oval! The Paillar team is only afraid of one thing - that some Englishmen with bad intentions will turn the local pub into a tea salon! Also when the All Blacks look for a sparring partner to prepare for the world cup, our players, Light bulb, Fat neck, the Anaesthetist, Trumpeter and Romeo can't resist the call of the southern hemisphere. Cauliflower ears, broken noses and black eyes aplenty!
"A Spoonful of Style and a Tonne of Class"
There was absolutely no way I wasn't going to go and find volume two of this hilarious series. I bought the first volume on a whim and was blown away by the sheer quality of the book. It originated as a French language comic and was translated to English by Cinebook and likewise with this volume too with Cinebook being the foremost translator of foreign language comics in Europe.
This volume sees the origins of the team with their coming together in school to foil a common enemy, the teacher. In true style of the book it takes place within the confines a rugby style ruck and kick and is truly funny to read and see. The origin is sub plot to the main story of the team being invited down to New Zealand to act as a training team to play against the mighty All-Blacks in their own back yard. The All-Blacks are of course the most fearsome team the world of Rugby has ever seen. To pass up this opportunity is something the guys don't even think about. They proceed to get the living daylights kicked out of them by the might Maori and they love every single minute of it. Either side of the match day goings on the team see and sample the delights of New Zealand. They take on a curiosity about how the New Zealander's are the large muscular size they are and take to spying on the mating habits of the native's and wonder how children can lift weight's the sizes most adults struggle with.
The book takes on the familiar style of the British weekly's once again. With one page representing a gag but also a page of story, each gag is genuinely funny and the whole book wreaks of the classic slapstick comedy comparable to the Marx brothers.
The art on the book is provided by Poupard once again and his distinctive style is all his own. To continue the comparisons that were mentioned by the writing you could compare his style of cartooning to that Sergio Aragones. This was a great book and the next volume can't come quick enough.
There is more Rugger Boys as far as I know but it is only in the French language so until it becomes translated to English I will have to patiently wait for it and wait I will. It is a great book and will have a place a the top of the comedy comic pile for quite a while I'd imagine.
