Chalk it up to Vertigo to give us another great series.
iZombie is the story of Gwen Dylan, who is a grave digger in an eco-friendly cemetary and also a zombie who must eat brains to keep her purple looks and mind intact. On this night of digging up her latest meal, however, she finds that her meal was murdered and she has to figure out the who and why.
Do you call it a 'zombie detective' story? Does this make the book 'zombie noir'? I dunno about that but it's a great read for a first issue, much like most books that Vertigo puts out. This is a different take on the zombie genre. For one, Gwen is still herself, though a zombie. She has to eat just to say relatively human. The downside for her is that when she eats brains, the memories of that particular dead tend to take over. I thought the cast that ranged from the vampiric paintballer, to Gwen's mummy friend, to be an interesting cast that rounds out a fantastic issue.
I'm not the least bit familiar with Chris Roberson but I really thought he created something fairly solid here. I think it's safe to say that there's a market for zombie stories but the little things in this help keep it unique. Mike Allred does the art and it looks superb. His style really helps this title stand out from your run of the mill zombie books. For me, this was the biggest draw. I'm a fan of Allred's and I'll buy just about anything that has his art on it. As far as the whole of the book, I found it easy to enjoy and even easier to lose myself in. A great read.
Maybe if those don't get you to purchase this, then this will: the first issue is just $1.00 and that's great in these hard, economic times. Add in a cool story with great art and you got yourself a book that you can easily enjoy.
