Irredeemable #14

Darren Mueller on the issue

Fourteen issues into the series, I feel a little bit silly for not coming to this realization earlier. The title Irredeemable has less to do with the Plutonian's reign of destruction, and far more to do with the card-house of secrets and lies that the paradigm is built upon. On this journey so far, Mark Waid has taken us from a public image of heroic icons, to understanding the grit and humanity that lies behind the fringes. Bette in particular seems to be a character who is going to be carrying the book through it's titular conclusion.

In this issue, "Survivor" and Orian breach back into their universe, a violent and brutal act that costs human lives. The fact that Survivor gets over this fairly quickly an has allied himself with this pan-dimensional killer shows how far this character has fallen. A brief glimpse into the backstory of Gil shows us there is more resourcefulness to this character than might have been imagined, and that despite a crippling injury, he is far from down and out. Tempers are frayed, and characters who were once allies, friends, and even lovers are barely held together by anything other than a desire to defeat the Plutonian, and survive. Animosity is evident in every glance, every word between the characters. Faustian bargains continue, as more members of the team (I won't spoil it for you) ally themselves with Orian. Lines have clearly been drawn, between team mates and for a last stand against the Plutonian.

While the issue does not feel overly paced, it manages to bring all the key players into position, for what will no doubt be a massive confrontation. Be fore warned, however that the build up to this moment really requires the intricate pacing of the prior issues, and this book is intended to be enjoyed for the story as a whole. If you haven't started, I recommend jumping to the trades. If you're a fan of the paperback, don't miss out on this. Everything is coming quickly to a head, and it will be an anxious 30 days to wait for the next part!
