Day Two: The Greatest Day Ever: A Heroes Con Report

By John Wilson

Day two at Heroes was a good day all around. As some would come to say, the best con day ever. The place was fairly packed with con attendees of all ages. The cosplay crowd was well represented with impressive costumes of characters like Hawkeye and Mockingbird, Cloak and Dagger, the African American Capt. America and a host of Green Lanterns, a few "you've almost got it right" examples and a couple of "Really...seriously?" attempts that you just have to admire their braver for trying to pull that off.

AInterview-wise, the joint was jumping indeed. I personally did two great interviews with Erika Moen, creator of the autobiographical webcomic Dar! and the creator of the all ages friendly Galaxy Man, Kyle Puttmaker. Darren did a couple of great interviews that are probably already on the site and Chuck did what must have been a hundred (an exaggeration but only slightly) interviews. All of which you can enjoy soon on Comic Related. We also had tons of traffic to the table and were able to talk to a number of people about the website. I also had my first real chance to walk around (Friday was busy with life stuff; check my blog later in the week). The mix of people and product is even more eclectic than I mentioned before. For example we, your ever-loving, favorite website are set up next to a video game based on Heaven (yeah, the irony is not lost on us either). I have been spending the weekend staring at the wide eyed mascot of Light Sheep Studios; we are adjacent to the author from Fantasy with Attitude and right behind Chris Flick of the webcomic and compilation book for Capes and Babes. Definitely an eclectic mix in a few square feet.

After the convention day, we had a truly rock star evening of moments. First we returned to a great restaurant called Mortimer's Cafe and Pub to have another of their fabulous sandwiches. We had eaten there on Thursday and had met the world's coolest bouncer (and former Lou Ferigno body guard), Michael Brown and the excellent management and staff. We offered them exposure on the website and they offered all who mentioned the Comic Related name a free beer. When we returned on Saturday, we not only received a free round but ultimately a free meal. Needless to say, we tipped very well. If you are ever in Charlotte, NC, you have to stop by Mortimer's. It is really worth it. After our meal, we made our nightly trek to Cold Stone Creamery for milkshakes and our buddies from Kirby Krackle went out of their way to come in and say Hi. That and all the people coming to see us today to talk about the website definitely made us feel like rock stars.

The rest of the night was spent working on the website and threatening Chuck for constantly saying that "nothing can go wrong". If you are a long-time reader you will remember the comedy of misery and error that was our last year's Hero experience, so I am very leery to tempt fate. But so far, he has been right; this has been the perfect con. Let's see if that luck holds out.
