The One Interview with Pasquale Qualano

by Decapitated Dan Royer (puyaybusto)

Welcome back kiddies. Decapitated Dan has lured Italian artist and sculptor Pasquale Qualano into his parlor this time to discuss his work on The One from GG Studio.

Decapitated Dan: Hey Pasquale, thanks for taking time to talk with me about The One. First of all lets talk about you. Who are you and what do you do?

Pasquale Qualano: I'm Pasquale Qualano and I live in Poggiomarino, near Napoli. At the age of 14 I began to work as sculptor, a tradition of my family very popular in Campania my country. At the same time I was trying to improve my ability in drawing, my other passion.

DD: How did you find yourself getting into making comics?

PQ: Four years ago I showed to Giuliano Monni, editor in chief of GG Studio, my portfolio and he saw great potential in my work. So I began to follow his advices and after four months I was drawing on She-Hulk for Marvel. After that Giuliano proposed me to publish a fantasy, a passion we share, for GG Studio.

DD: So what can you tell me about The One?

PQ: The One is a medieval fantasy with a RPG form based. It took a lot of time to study its background, its inhabitants with their own skills, their weapons and armors.

DD: Who are the any main characters

PQ: Main characters are Faras, an Adros warrior, Hagghart, an Egristhon warrior, Masdin a Redharin prince, Omir, a Renahrin and Ediadon, a great Adros king.

DD: Where did the ideas for this story come from?

PQ: The story isn't a my idea, it's came from the head of Giuliano Monni a great follower of J.R. Tolkien. We can say The One is a tribute to this great writer.

DD: If you were to give this book a movie style rating (G, PG, PG-13, R, X) what would it get, and why would you say that?

PQ: I think the rate for The One is "PG" even if it has a lot of details and aspect that can take adults up. I think every comics today, except for Mickey Mouse or Donald, should have this rate; life and death, love and courage, friendship and bravery are all issues that could be faced with parents.

DD: In terms of fantasy what can we expect?

PQ: There'll be many great mass battles scenes, evolution of characters, more powerful weapons and armors and new unexplored lands. And the very bad guys are still not arrived.

DD: What are you hoping readers can take away from this book?

PQ: I think it's a good visual experience, that can enlarge the visual imaginary of everyone.

DD: How have people reacted to the book so far?

PQ: People were hungry in Europe of new medieval fantasy stories but not of simple fight and magic stories. The world of The One is very realistic and detailed, something you can find only in some RPG game like WOW.

DD: Can you tell me what it has been like to release this book in Europe and now for it to be coming to North America?

PQ: In Europe there're a lot fans of the fantasy. When The One was released at Lucca Comics, the main comic convention in Italy, it goes sold out! We were very proud of this success.

In North America its numbers are growing up... we'll see after the NY-Con.

DD: Can we expect more The One material in the future?

PQ: Probably I'll sculpt some female characters of the series. Stay tuned!

DD: Can we expect more titles from you in the future?

PQ: I think I'll go on with my collaboration with GG Studio on a new adventures comic... but maybe you have to ask to Giuliano to know something more about that.. :))

DD: Any strange or interesting stories from shows you care to share?

PQ: Giuliano and me always try to introduce more sexy details in the story. Sometimes they could be inappropriate or exaggerated, I admit it... :)) Fortunately our pretty colorist Alessia helps to establish the right balance!

DD: Were you into any comics growing up that lead you to want to create a book like this?

PQ: I'm a great fan of "Conan" by Bushema and Frank Frazetta's illustrazions. We' ve tried to repropose this kind of fascination with the color in the final result working with Alessia Nocera and Andrea Errico.

DD: What comics are you currently reading?

PQ: I'm reading Peter Pan of Loisell, a modern and more mature version of the story that we use to know. And I've just finished "100 Bullet".

DD: So where can readers find out more about this book?

PQ: www.ggstudio.deviantart.com - www.ggstudiodesign.com- www.qualano.deviantart.com

DD: So in summary give me a quick recap on The One and why fans should give it a try.

PQ: It' a great story of adventure and heroism setting in a AFFASCINATE and very realistic land. Very recommended to all passionate of RP and fantasy.

DD: Thanks so much for your time, Pasquale.

PQ: Thank you for the opportunity to talk to the US readers.
