hosted press release from Starkweather Studios

Shadowgirls First Anniversary Celebration
No. 1 horror comic on the Web celebrates its one-year anniversary and holds writer’s contest

Starkweather Studios today announced plans to celebrate the first anniversary of its hit webcomic, “Shadowgirls.” The comic was created a few years back by Dave Reynolds and David A. Rodriguez, who handle the art and writing, respectively. Their collaboration began with the intent to pitch a new series to publishers, but it quickly took on a life of its own. The freshman webcomic stormed onto the scene twelve months ago and has quickly climbed the rankings to become the No. 1 horror comic on the Internet. Today, “Shadowgirls” boasts more than 1 million visitors in its short tenure and 18,000 regular readers.

Coinciding with the anniversary, Starkweather Studios is announcing a contest designed exclusively for aspiring writers! Would-be comic book authors can submit an original eight-page script featuring any assortment of characters from the “Shadowgirls” series. The script must be able to stand on its own and not rely on the existing “Shadowgirls” storyline. Starkweather Studios will provide complete artwork for the winning entry, and the story will be published in an upcoming anthology titled “Shadowgirls: Tales from Innsmouth.” The winning author will be awarded a one-of-a-kind 3’ x 6’ Wizard World convention banner signed by the creative team. Finally, all accepted entries will have a chance to win an Xbox 360 Pro. Visit www.shadowgirlscomic.com for complete rules and entry information.

“We could not be more excited about the incredible support from our fans, which has lead to our rapid growth and our exploring new areas with ‘Shadowgirls,’ such as our recently announced RPG adventures and materials for ‘Mutants and Masterminds’ and ‘True20.’ I don’t think either of us could have predicted the kind of success we’ve experienced so far and being able to put out so much material,” Rodriguez said.

To date, Shadowgirls has more than six issues worth of full-color pages online, not including supplemental materials such as pin-ups and character profiles.

“We are really looking forward to wrapping up our first big story arc and seeing where the next year takes us,” Rodriguez said.

Join the Shadowgirls’ growing Web community in celebrating this auspicious occasion by stopping by and reading more than 100 pages of content, participating in the unique metaplot on the Innsmouth Insider RPG forums or entering the contest.

About Shadowgirls
At the tender age of fifteen, Charon McKay disappeared from the small coastal town of Innsmouth, Massachusetts. When she turns up nine month later, she is incoherent and raving and—slightly more surprising—pregnant. No one knows who the father is and even Charon can’t remember what happened to her. The only thing people know for sure is that she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Rebecca Sue McKay and that both she and her mother are decidedly strange. In fact, most people stay away from them entirely. But Charon and Becka have more immediate worries. Strange creatures have appeared in Innsmouth and awakened dark and terrifying powers within the girls. Only the Shadowgirls can stand against this ancient threat…if the power doesn’t consume them first.
