Gemini #1

Image Comics

Jay Faerber has become known for taking the superhero genre and turning out unique and innovative spins on the typical concepts and themes we all know and love. From Noble Causes to Dynamo 5, Faerber’s distinctive perspective on superheroes has gained cult followings few independent superhero titles garner. The latest from this esteemed writer should be no exception.

Gemini #1 is basically the story of a superhero who has no clue he’s a superhero. He is triggered by keywords from a government organization. In his normal life, he’s not even remotely aware of his alter ego, he just goes about a mundane existence, almost zombie like as we see in this first issue.

Faerber’s writing shines here as it does in most of his work. It can be a little bit cheesy at times, but in a good, familiar way with a little tongue in cheek flavor to it. But the best and most interesting thing about Faerber’s writing is that he’s not afraid to take risks. And because this is his world, he is able to do just about anything within the confines of his books, and he does! Just wait until you see the MAJOR cliffhanger at the end of this issue!

Faerber is also known to take chances with new artists, this time in the case of Jon Sommariva. I’ve not seen his art anywhere before, but his style certainly fits into the familiar fun and over the top styles we’ve become accustomed to in Faerber’s other titles. His art is vibrant, stylistic, and technically sound. He is also not afraid to take risks, and those risks pay off in a big way in this book.

We also get to see some cameos from other Faerber-verse characters such as Venture in this issue, which is always a nice thing to see.

The concept of this book is unique, the writing and art are unique, and the ending to this first issue is most certainly unique. If you have not checked out Faerber’s Image books yet, now is the time to start. Gemini is a good example of his overall style and take on superheroes, and I guarantee you the last page of this book will leave you speechless.

Easily an 8 out of 10.
