Site of the Month - August 2008

Since December of 2005, on a monthly basis, we've been linking to sites we felt deserved an unsolicited pointer. To date, we're simply posted a visual link on the main page of our site and on our links page. With this month's selection, we're expanding our Site of the Month feature to include a bit of commentary on why we feel the site stands out from the crowd.

Tom Spurgeon served as the managing and executive editor for the acclaimed comic magazine The Comics Journal from 1994 to 1999. In 2004, he co-established the Comics Reporter, a now legendary comics news blog, with site designer Jordan Raphael.

Why was this site chosen as a Site of the Month?

When people discuss comic journalism at its finest, you often hear the Comics Reporter pointed to as a must read daily comic information blog. The name Tom Spurgeon, who serves as the writer behind the blog, has become one of the most respected voices in comic reporting. There are a few other sites that really excel in this area (Journalista which we've covered previously is one example and we'll cover at least one additional site in a future Site of the Month). This month, the Comics Reporter gets our top honors.

For their coverage of upcoming events to the news of the day to the in depth interviews, this site stands at the head of a very elite class. The quantity and quality of the content makes it a site that, once sampled, will draw you back day after day.

Having gotten the chance to speak with Tom at this year's Charlotte HeroesCon, it was refreshing to find an individual with this kind of commitment and skill who is also approachable and friendly to someone he just met. For this comic fan, The Comics Reporter is a site I read at the start of each day. I respect blogs, magazines or websites that encourage the reader to learn more about the ever growing world of comics. The Comics Reporter is a site you need to know and you need to read. There is no simpler test of quality when it comes to a site and we wish to publicly thank Tom for his dedication and hard work.
